cpt ron rocked--should be a sail training flick. waterworld was stupid and funny. gave us good ammo for jet skiers..LOL....overboard was fun with goldie hawn--granted was a stinkpot and had no sails.
you cant take these movies seriously. none of them are--even the sail training flicks....

dead calm sukked massively.
ghost ship sukked bad.
on golden pond--the scene with the skiff crashing into a rock. lol...movie was overrated. shouldnt a had a pond in it. boat had no sail.

then there are the sailing movies without boats........me n cpt ron are screening them now-- come on over for beerz....dont forget to bring some!!

I also enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I think Jack Sparrow and Capt Ron would've gotten along quite nicely.

The regatta in One Crazy Summer was crap, though I loved the rest of that movie. It says a lot about my personality, I guess.
This was the one I had in mind. Not familiar with race rules in Massachusetts but I've never been in one where we switched to power at the windward mark. Also never won a race with sails made from quilts and blankets (although we've been known to have a bit of sailtape between repairs...)

Hate to say it, but I did enjoy much of Wind (especially if you FF through many parts of the move). It will inspire me to sell the minivan and start my own America's Cup effort.

Don't get me wrong the sailing footage in the movie is rightious, the dialog makes me cringe.

I think the sailing movie I have enjoyed the most is White Squall. I own and watch Master and Commander a couple times a year. Best movie from Jeff Bridges evah! It took me two attempts to really enjoy all the goodness that is Capn Ron.

I was hoping they would do a follow up to Morning Light. That was well documented and entertaining.

Speaking of Jennifer Grey.... Dirty Dancing.. you can catch her each week right now on Dancing With the Stars. Looks good after all these years.

Capt Ron..... cool boat... best scene was Jobeth in the shower. But...terrorists, third world despots... gimme a break.

If you're really looking for the greatest movie sailing scene ever... get a copy of "Captains Courageous" with Spencer Tracy. Opening segment.... The fishing schooners racing back to Nantucket in heavy seas to be first to sell their goods........ FANTASTIC !!!.

Master & Commander... awesome, but I wanted a real sea battle, not shots in the fog. Try "Captain Horatio Hornblower" with Gregory Peck and Virginia Mayo.

No one has mentioned the movie version of "the Dove" ... wonder why?

Truth is... Hollywood can mess anything up that we may be familar with. For instance, any Tom Cruise movie... Top Gun, Cocktail, Days of Thunder..etc.. were all abominations in trying to replicate the star's profession.. So was "wind" ... it was an abomination in trying to represent the America's Cup... but it was a fantasy, as are all hollywood products, and the formula for financial success requires inserting things to appeal to the general public... so I was not interested in Jennifer Grey's nose... (but how she looked in those white shorts.) I was thrilled by the International 15's speed and crashes, I loved seeing the crew work together and the on the water and in the race boat video shots... something we're used to know but was pretty new technology 20 years ago.

I thought the sailing shots were great, the story was good, the acting was........well........pretty sucky! Even saying that, I've seen it about 20 times.

As a documentary ...

I thought Morning Light was extremely dull. We saw it in a theatre and I basically couldn't wait for it to end. For a Disney production, I was surpised that it lacked just about anything to make it interesting. I really can't remember much about it and doubt that I would sit thru it again ... that's how it impressed me.

As far as worst fiction movie with sailing? I would say Open Water 2. It's a shame because it was a beautiful boat.

Wind was pretty good, I thought! Sure it had some really implausible scenes, such as the windless section where everybody was laying around in the final race, but it also had some great scenes. I liked the war dance on the boat as they were being towed out of the harbor ... It was a fun movie to be sure and I like to watch it every once in a while!

Right actor, wrong flic!

Look for Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn in "The World in His Arms" a movie about sailing in Alaska and (sadly) seal hunting. Two schooners sailing the Bering Sea. The director indicated that in the climactic racing scene, Quinn's boat, which was scripted to lose the race, kept beating Peck's and had to be, uh, 'restrained'!

The plot sucks, but the sailing is real and spectacular.

I liked the line in Cap'n Ron about not being able to go to the states due to statute of limitations. LOL Kurt Russell is great in anything he's in, almost. Let's talk about great sailing movies. My vote goes to the original Captain Horatio Hornblower with Gregory Peck, an actors actor. Waddya think? Fair Winds...
