What about the old TV series, "wackiest ship in the army"? Sailing all over the south pacific during WWII.

Re: C.S. Forester...how he came up with Hornblower..

Hey Joe, My kids gave me the A&E boxed set for Christmas. It follows the book(s) pretty closely and the acting is superb. Enjoy it! Have you seen the 1954 version with Gregory Peck and Virginia Mayo directed by Raoul Walsh. Well Done! They were thinking of Flynn but by that time he was too old. Funny Story about the African Queen. In the late 30's they had cast David Niven and Bette Davis in the major roles and were set to go into production. The project wash shelved due to the outbreak of WWII. When Bogie won the Oscar for Best Actor in the 1950's version, David Niven who was Bogies good friend jokingly told Bogie the Oscar was his and to give it up! True story. Fair Winds...

Regarding Gilligans Island, I made a winch out of two coconut halves. Top that professor. Adventures in Paradise came from Tales of the South Pacific by James Michener. I had all but forgotten about it. Wasn't the actors name Gardner McKay? He had a new babe every week. I guess I have the wrong kind of boat. Fair winds...

Yes..... a number of times... I think Greg Peck's casting as Hornblower and Virginia Mayo's as lady Barbara was perfect.... Tall, strong, quiet, decisive, self-critical, loyal and very brave. Like Atticus Finch...... I'm so glad it wasn't John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart that played the part... just wouldn't work... JW--- "Walll you little Frenchies, Time to meet your maker..." of JS-- "W-w-w-w-ell, L-L-L-et's see now... w-w-w-ould you L-L-L-ike another broadside, M-M-M-ister F-F-rog??"

here's another:

"Joe and the Volcano" where Tom Hanks charters Meg Ryan's beautiful schooner to take him to a remote island... the voyage becomes part of his rebirth.

Hey Joe, I like your idea. Clint Eastwood as Hornblower, Go ahead Napoleon make my day" Or Jack Nicholson, "Here's Horatio!" Or Strother Martin, "Bonaparte, what we have here is failure to communicate." Fair Winds...

Did any of you know that the screenplay for Moby Dick was written by Ray Bradbury?

Had to watch Capt Ron!

Yesterday I was down double-tying the boat for this weekend's storm and just generally puttering around when I noticed Captain Ron sitting on the shelf. Needless to say I didn't much done after that ;)

I just found Adventures in Paradise on DVD, though most of the reviews say the picture quality isn't great. But then the picture quality on UHF when I was a kid wasn't all that great either. Hmm...

There was a version of Moby Dick a few years ago with Patrick Stewart aka Capt Pickard as Ahab. Pretty good Ahab, not a great version. Fair winds...

I just remembered that Adam Sandler's character in 50 First Dates was restoring a sailboat to take to the arctic. There are some early scenes with him sailing disasterously, but later in the film, the now-beautifully restored boat has been sailed to some stunning scenery in Alaska.
