Motor Flush

I was disconnecting the hose(still turned on) from the suction cup flush thingy and when I got to the last thread, water pressure took over. It is always nice too when you have that split second thought right before it happens but not soon enough to prevent it. Time to test my dive light!

Fate won't be denied-

I ran down to the boat, forget what for, but as I was leaving, my cellphone holster caught the standing rigging. It literally catapulted the phone up to eye height (I swear I heard the phone giggle) and dove straight for the water. Lightning doesn't accurately describe my reflexes; more sloth-like. I watched sadly as the tiny bubbles rose to the surface, telling me where the phone was, and remiding me I couldn't get it!. Now, I know the phone was ruined the instant it hit the water, but I REALLY wanted the SIM card inside the phone. As fate would have it, Scubaclean's van was 5 slips away. I couldn't believe he wanted $55 to get the phone when I KNEW WHERE IT WAS! I passed. Went 2 blocks away to waste marine to buy a net...for $27.00!! This can't be happening. The guy felt bad, because the $27 didn't include any pole, just the net!! He had a broken pole that he gave to me, so I was grateful. I go back to the boat, and try to scoop it out. Our water is only 7-9 foot deep, but very dirty. I never knew the bottom of my slip was all rocks! I could'nt feel anything down there! I wasn't about to admit defeat though. Went to Target, and bought a nice Scuba mask. I'm going in! I was gone about an hour. When I came back, the water was light brown- they dredged the 2 slips next to mine and you couldn't see 2 inches in that water!! I decided then and there I wasn't going to win against the sea. Fate won't be dinied. cup

Water Proof/Floating Cell Phone

I noticed the number of cell phones gone overboard, so I will relate my experience. After losing my cell phone overboard during a headsail change, I purchased a Casio G’Z One Type S cell phone. It is made to Military standards (MIL-STD-810F) and is not only shock resistant, dust resistant, and water resistant it also is supposed to float. The best feature on the phone is the loop antenna to which I have fastened a lanyard. I wear it slung around my neck, tucked inside my shirt, and on vibrate so I can feel it in a noisy environment. (My wife calls it a “geezer phone”) This sucker is a great phone. Not only does it perform well, it takes a lot of hard knocks. It’s not too “sexy” but it does what I need a phone to do. Shine On! Don PS. I do not work for, nor am I associated with Verizon.

Fate won't be denied on land either.

I'm just finishing up a major renovation of my great room and kitchen at home...during which all the heat/ac 'registers' in the floor were removed. EVERYthing I've dropped that landed on the floor within 5' of any of 'em has gone down one of 'em. I now have one of the world's larger collections of nuts, bolts, crews, tools and small kitchen utensils etc in my ducts...and if you think retrieving stuff from a bilge is a challenge, try fishing it out of ductwork in which the 90 is 6' below the floor...you CAN'T!! The apple is actually the only one I'm concerned about, though...unless the AC "freeze dries" it this summer, my house could have an odor next winter that even I can't solve! After donating enough hand tools etc on my boat to Davy, I learned to drill a hole in the handle and put a lanyard through it that went around my wrist (though I never did learn to stop bending over the water while my sunglasses were on the top of my head)...but the idea that Davy is a piker compared to household heat/ac ducts came as complete surprise to me!

Hand-Held GPS

Wasn't my fault. (Yeah. Right.) It was the way that our chartered 30-footer's cockpit cushions covered the plastic door over the diesel control panel. ...had to lift the cockpit cushion to open the panel, and, opps!, the doggoned cushion flipped my GPS over the taffrail. What really made me mad was that the GPS was a retirement gift from my son, plus all the lost waypoints and routes that I had manually entered into it. My crew all said, "I'm glad that I didn't do it." Even if the GPS would have floated, we had neither a net or other way to retrieve it. Another lesson learned...

It would be really interesting

to "drain the swamp" so to speak, that is drain all the water out of where you keep your boat, and see just what all of us have dropped into the drink over the years...*pop

When it comes to Davy Jones and our...

possessions I'm very tight fisted. Nothing this past year or the year prior. Terry P.S. In 2001 on our previous boat my cousin lost her digital camera overboard as she was getting off the boat. It took me a day or so to have a diver recover it, but by then the salt water had done its work.

Ripped from Davey's hands

I took a line from my dockmate as she was bringing her boat into the slip. Her crew jumped off with their beers in hand and seemed a little too happy or inexperienced. They seemed to be geting the boat secured so I went back to my boat. About a minute later I hear the owner yelling "Oh my God" repeatedly. On the third "Oh my God" I come up on deck and see her looking down into the water at the end of her slip and her crew don't seem to be doing anything. So I jog over figuring there is a pet or crew in the water injured. Well, her bicycle had fallen in and it was expensive and was down about 20 feet out of sight. I had just taken by danforth lunch hook anchor off the boat and it was sitting in the dock box. I took the chain off and tied the rope rode back on and cleated it off and then handed the anchor to one of her crew. As I was walking away, the bike was retrieved on the first try, just hanging on the anchor by the peddle. Dockmate still leaves her bike on the water side of the dockbox, unsecured, so I have been leaving the Danforth in my unlocked dock box, available when needed.

Actually...

I retract my previous post. Davy did get a couple of bottles of good champagne... when we re-named the boat! Captain had many martinis. Thinking of changing the name again.
