What bottom paint for PNW...

...that the divers can clean w/o poisoning themselves or causing an environmental incident.
They (the dive co.) tell me the new CSC.ca I used last is softer than the old formula so I'm thinking hard paint but what is there besides VC Offshore which seems kinda' fussy.

I can get 2.5 to 3 years out of micron csc. However, I sail at least once a month, clean the bottom twice a year (slime). The last 6 months I can tell it's starting to loose its efficacy.

If the boat stays stationary a lot or doesn't get the bottom cleaned, bottomkote (softer0 may be a better choice, but it does 2 years max and you cant rub/clean the hull.without removing paint. We have very limited choices in canada.

I've been super impressed with prop one for the prop. I see a lot of boaters spray zinc, which does bubkis for growth.

I have used Micron CSC (now CSC CA) since the boat was new in 2012 and get anywhere from 2 - 4 years until it requires reapplication. However, the lengthy "immersion" time specification for the Canadian CSC (CSC-CA) makes it difficult to apply in our climate in any other period than between May and Sep.

4-6 times per season. Absolutely before local marquee events.
I need to figure out which is the hardest of the ablatives anymore.
I could do something like Bottomcoat, burnish it before launch, clean regular and re-do every year.
But then I'd have to wet sand w/80 grit before application every year to keep old paint build up within tolerable limits.

Can't believe the amount of labour that you put into your boat. Also like the term "hull velcro." The perfect ekphrasis.

A big ALSO here, would it be out of the question to change moorage to Thunderbird Marina in West Van ? Good tidal flow and I'm sitting at six years right now with nothing more than the annual half haul for a pressure wash, quick look around and throw a few zincs at it.

It would likely be cheaper than the six in situ cleanings every year. Speaking of divers engaged in cleaning, I've never seen one in the marina other than to haul up the ubiquitous fixer upper every so often.

Definitely a cure if the distance isn't too far from home. And you like driving over the bridge .

No c'mon!
I drove transit busses over those bridges for a decade. No way I'm subjecting myself to the tyranny of lousy Vancouver drivers in my retirement. lol....
I'm only going over 2nd Narrows (from Comm. Dr.) at the tail end of the morning rush to whip off a couple runs at Seymour or a lap on my mtn. bike and high tailing it back b4 madness ensues.
The only starts closer to Thunderbird are Popham Isl. and the unfortunately named " 'round" Bowen race.
Thursday nighters run 15 or 16 wks spring/summer like 10mins from Civic. Scramble, T-10, Anything Goes etc.
If I were an ardent cruiser then yeah, for sure T-Bird would be a perfect springboard.
Diver spends 11 min on my boat @ I think $7.50 per. If it's hard paint then he can get his nose in it it'll be maybe 20?

I berth my boat in Oak Harbor Marina on Whidbey Island and use Petitt Trinidad. I put in on in 2005 when I brought my boat from Coeur d' Alene. I repainted it in 2014 and again in 2023. I get 9 years with no muscles growing on the fiberglass hull and just a few in rough spots on the lead keel.

I dive the boat spring and fall to replace zincs and clean the running gear. The hull just has a thin layer of slime that wipes off easily.

I guess there's no pleasant memories there to rekindle. Best let sleeping dogs lie.

All that aside, I would still very strongly recommend :

It's still maintaining about 1/2 the price of Micron, is harder than Micron, and all you have to do is wait for that tracer coat to show through which will be long after the Micron is gone and forgotten.

Also be sure you don't rush the procedure :

• make sure the old bottom coat is bone dry from at least one full day in the hot sun. Doesn't apply to you now.
• use a minimum of two coats
• give the final coat a full day to dry.

I've never seen a single barnacle on the hull and given a full day of movement, that seems to remove much of the slime.

I too use Trinidad. Hard surface. Easy clean say my diver. I have been getting 5-6 years between paint jobs.

Pettit makes an Odyssey line for Canada. The Odyssey 60 (or Odyssey HD) are practical, high-performing choices.

My C30 takes a bit more than 1.5 gallons. I save the leftover paint and use it first on the next time painting. It lasts almost indefinitely in the can as long as you store the can upside-down so that no air can get in.

Ralph, that picture makes me want to grab my sanding blocks!

Buddy's going the B-ham next wk - he could get me some Trinidad.
But..... don't think I can apply it over Primocon, which is all over the keel and I'm not keen on taking that down to whatevers covering the lead + the fairing Clint did to the leading edge.

I was looking into the Odyssey paint mentioned above and noticed it was cheaper in Cda. so I asked my phone what the difference was and of course there's less copper in the Cdn. produvct but more VOC's are allowed. Go figure.
That AI generated info was tagged with these forums and bringing that up led to my post here 2yrs ago inquiring into Petit Horizons. Too funny.
To be clear I'd forgotten I'd used the Horizon and not the CSC.
Reviews of the Horizon lauded it as a "budget" product. Its performance certainly was "budget".
So the Odyssesy has 44% co but the US version has only 1.7% more I wonder what the Cdn. govt.'s agency regulating anti-foul paints thinkng was here.

Bottomkote has 42.7.co while the Ultrakote has a whopping 76%!
