my point...

Kevan:

There are many causes for rudder failure. The most common reason is water intrusion and/or grounding.

Steve, How did your link relate to rudder failures and

rudders falling off boats? It seemed to me just a link to the maker "Foss" and their acknowledgement that the foam core they use is not stable to 175 degrees fahrenheit. If they would spend another 25 bucks the could use Airex core or Corecell and not have that problem.

As Ross stated, make a list. Things you feel you must have, things you want, and things you can't live with. Go from there. As you look at more boats, you will see more and more specific things to like/dislike. If you want to go south and live aboard for extended periods, I would recommend you to move your lower limit up to 30. I lived on a 28 for some time, and it does get a little cramped. You can do it, but will appreciate the added room of a 30. In your price range, do not overlook the Cheribini Hunters. They built these boats from 77 to 83, or there abouts, and they are almost legendary. Have some friends who have a 76 model 33. Hell of a boat.

Kevan, As you look at boats, make note of how much of the usable

space is in the boat and how much is in the cockpit. A friends O'Day 27 sacrificed 3 feet of cockpit space for cabin space and had as much room below as have in a 30 foot Islander.

Steve, i still don't know how your link related to rudder failures. ;)

i think i miss-judged the size i need!

ok-i first thought i would need at least 27 feet especially after FOB sent pics of his 27 ft catalina-but now im thinking back to a trailerable because-although everyone says it will be easy to get a slip-i don't think it will be-and if its over 3000 a year-well thats a bit high-dont you think?

Kevan - end of discussion - get a Shark 24

There are lots of them for sale in your area - they are certainly priced right - they hold their value - easy to maintain - trailerable.
There are Shark 24 regattas all over the Golden Horseshoe area.
Higgs started a thread a couple of weeks ago about the Shark.
Shark 24 is one boat that has been proven to be able to handle Lake Ontario. Sharks love the lake when it gets snarly and mean.

What ever boat

I think guys just like taking pot shot's at Hunters
for some reason, but we hear stories of new and old other boats
having problems too,you need to check out really well what ever
brand you decide to buy.
Many people started out with a trailer sailor and than moved to
a full keel,go slow take you time its very hard trying to decide which boat is for you,how will you use it and what you expect from it is the big factor.
There are many happy Hunter in my marina and also catalina's and benn too.

Nice & Easy and Ross pointed out a couple of good boats

The Cherubini Hunters are great boats (I am biased since I have one ;) ). They are built like tanks and have nice classic lines. It can't hurt to take a look at one.
A good friend of mine has an Oday 272 and it seems to meet the criteria you are looking for. Like Ross said it has a lot of room inside. It is an easy boat to sail, it is comfortable, and has decent performance. You can find them with tiller or wheel. My friend's boat has been pretty much maintenance free.

Steve..i'll beat ya' LOL

Steve I have a C&C 27 that will out run your Hunter 31, matter of fact I used to blow one away every weekend. Hunters are very nice boats..just not the fastest. With that being said every boat shines in it's own wind. I have out run 36's in light air and they have kicked my butt when the wind is 20 knots.

seadaddler and manny-whats your thoughts on this HUNTER

first to manny and seadaddler-i'm not writing off hunters-i am corresponding with this guy and here is the boat add-is anyone familiar with this boat? GUYS LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS: 86 Hunter 23, on a trailer, asking 5,000 for it. I have been using a largeish trolling motor on it - comes with old 10 horse, 2 stroke outboard, I use the boat often - at least every other weekend. Has an older main and jib, plus a newer (couple years old) 140 genoaat 23 1/2 ' ft long and 8' wide. There is an origio single burner alcohol stove, the bathroom is via portable potty. Also, a teak folding table inside. Generally we sleep in the vee berth - I am 6' (1.9 meters) and comfortable sleeping there. sailing-wise, there is a halyard winch and 2 jib winches (1 speed). All the halyards are led to the cabintop. Jib leads have adjustable cars, mainsheet traveler is adjustable, 4:1 purchase on the main. The main is original, and in decent shape. I also have a 110% jib and a 140% genoa, both in good shape, and each have their own sheets the keel is 375 kg, with a draft of about 75 cm. there is a retracable centerboard that can extend this down another meter or so. All-up weight is about 1150 kg. I do have a nice sunbrella bimini, that is only a year and a half old.

So to all of you that have been helpfull so far-give me your take on this one-i'm very interested in this unit and if we can set up a test sail-i think ill grab it-its from the states and 25k less than a 30 yr old-mind you iots loaded-so get back to me-kevan
