Two weeks and you're not in a rush?

That sounds like a rush to me. Why not buy a house next week? there's no rush, it just has to need no work.
A sailboat that needs a little work is a new one. It sounds like you are rushing the purchase of your second home (boat). I looked for over a year before I decided on mine. And it had everything I wanted. and it still needed work. And it still needs work. And it's been almost four years and still in need. Good luck.
Keep it up,
Ctskip

Best

They are all good depending on how well they were
cared for by PO.
Which ever boat you decide to buy make sure you get it checked
out by some one who really knows boats.
Know matter what boat you buy used will need fixing or some
kind of upgrades.
Get the best boat you can get for the money, best price boat.

contradiction

ctskip: it does sound a little bit of a contradiction doesn't it-thats what i though when i hit send-the first thing i thought of when i hit send was my kids and how proud they were when dad made a mistake in pronuciation or grammar-then i though "you know-the same thing will happen here that happens with the kids-then i though-GEEZ-i should have mentioned this has been going on for more than 2 years now-ok ctskip-sorry i ommited that fact-thanks for your reply-kevan

I bought a house with a 5 day shopping

window. Nancy and I each made a list of ten traits that we considered must haves and ten traits that we considered must NOT haves. Then we reconcilled out lists to just ten positive and ten negative traits. These traits were in the CAN NOT be changed class, everything else was open for consideration. Then we went house hunting. It made rejections much easier and it made "can be considered" choices easier. We bought a house that met our criteria and we wondered at the time if our criteria was flawed. Cosmetically the house was bloddy awful. I tell this because it helps to keep you objective at a time when emotion can be a mind cloging factor. We still live in the house that we bought by this approach in 1971 and we are pleased with it.

thats close to how we did it

Things like fireplace and garage were important items. Just as bimini and stove and AC and refrigerator are important for the boat. One thing that we did was to create a value rating to the individual items. Not all biminis are created equal just as all fireplaces aren't. Just as all pools aren't equal. We rated the important "top ten" items on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best. Some items I liked better than the wife and some not. Which ever house/ boat gave us the highest rating thats the one we bought. We looked harder for the lake than we did the house. Texas was a given, as the inlaws are here.

You're making a mistake by not considering Hunters

Kevan:

Hunter's are great boats. If you do not consider Hunters in your mix you will leave a lot of nice boats with great prices on the table.

One boat you may be able to find is the Hunter 31 & 34 in your price range. Don't know that you find a better boat for a $25-30k price range.

Check out the boat reviews on any Hunter that you may look at. You will find any potential problem right there.

i was ok with hunters-but some reviews said there very slow but reliable-the i guess a rudder fell off one and someone coulda been killed-but they compare them to edsel's slow lunkers that need alot of work-thats my take on then from forums and reviews and just personal comments from places like this

You can tell a new sail from a old one

can't you? You know raw teak from finished teak? a wet bilge from a dry one?
Just list the top items you need, then list the items you want. Check for similarities. Now you have your list. Roller furling? In mast furling? Heat and air? propane verses alcohol? gas verses diesel? full verses swing verses wing? Two cabin layout? shower? hot water? water pressure? tiller verses wheel? cockpit layout? headroom? wood verses steel verses fiberglass. Walk thru transom? Split rear stay? The list is almost endless. Make your list of what is MOST important for YOU and rate the items on your list for each boat. With 1 being in need of replacement and 10 being new. Only you can do this. Good luck
Keep it up,
Ctskip

Kevan, Sailboats are slow! some just aren't as fat as others.

Read this link for some more insight on boat types and speed.

sounds like you are listening to Sailnet chat Kevin

This is almost definitely a reference from one or more of the folks who sit on Sailnet who thinks it makes them sound authoritative by criticizing behind some silly screen name anonymity.

SailorKevin's quote"

"was ok with hunters-but some reviews said there very slow but reliable-then i guess a rudder fell off one and someone could have been killed-but they compare them to edsel's slow lunkers"

I hate to tell you....

Kevan: I hate to tell you but there isn't a Catalina or Beneteau of the same size that my Hunter 31 would not outrun.

When you start hearing about the stories of the interiors of the older Catalina's pulling up from the cabin sole you won't want one of them either.

When you hear about the bilsters that the older Swans get you won't want one of them either.

Every mfg. has had their problems. The more of a product they make the more problems they have. Most of the boats you are looking at have had any problems that are going to show up has happened and been repaired.
