Rich, do you have a link to reports of these U.S. Boater murders? I would think they'd be all over the news......
FWIW - in 2014 there were SEVERAL murders of US boaters in Nassau and in Bimini ... and inside 'protected' marinas. .

Uh, you don't hit them with the fire extinguisher, you spray it in their face. While they are trying to get their breath back and clear their eyes, you can lock yourself in the cabin, get a knife or a fish gaff/club or whatever, hell a hammer might help. But I'm pretty sure a face full of fire extinguisher will incapacitate someone for a few minutes, in the confines of a cockpit, but obviously NOT in a street situation a cop might run into, duh.Sure, if you're a physically capable male with the guts and know-how to get the upper hand on a likely muscular and aggressive attacker. Machete-wielding bad ass vs retired cruising couple with a fire extinguisher? Please. Your group have no clue of real world testing.
And did someone say to use a flare gun as a weapon? I wouldn't count it as either a lethal nor even formidable tool for the job.
In a lethal battle, you'll need lethal force. Gun, knife, bat, pipe wrench, even a chrome steel winch handle is a lethal weapon. A fire extinguisher is not, typically, unless it's large enough you can use it as a staver.
If your group were correct, all of law enforcement would be carrying around fire extinguishers.
If the battle is non-lethal, ie: there's no sign that your life is in danger, then the non lethal weapons can be deployed to shoo the invader.
Or you can talk him off the boat, being forceful and confident. This would be my most desirable outcome.
I was in the BVI, sitting on the boat. I called lady friend in Hartford, CT. "Cane Garden Bay?" says she. Someone was just murdered there! Wasn't me" says I. She only knew about it because the person/family was from Hartford. Local bartender says they don't "spread the news" as it stiffles tourism. "Money talks" is one saying, the other- I guess opposite- is "Talk doesn't make money"?Rich, do you have a link to reports of these U.S. Boater murders? I would think they'd be all over the news.
Uh, no kidding. You missed the humor. But thanks for the snide comment.Uh, you don't hit them with the fire extinguisher, you spray it in their face.
I don't know how asking a simple question could turn in a big political , anti -gun debate. I asked a easy to answer question and for some reason the tree huggers thoought it would be good to voice their opinion. I carry a weapon, I will protect my family and myself without trying to go against someone with a knife or gun with an explosive can of bug spray trying to shoot a flame out of it. I have lived in the Florida Keys and Pigeon Forge Tennessee, both huge tourist areas. While I lived there I was in Law Enforcement. If you think on of their local newspapers report the crime going on in their tourist oriented area you are dead wrong. My whole family carries legally with permits not visible. My intention was just some general weapon information, I am not planning on walking the streets of Nassau with my AR15 slung over my shoulder. I am a semi collector and target shooter, but not foolish enough to think if someone boards you vessel at night not announcing they are law enforcement you have a dangerous problem. I would never try to shoot a flare at a suspect on board my boat, I carried pepper spray and have used pepper spray which works on some people but have had people that showed little or no effect. Please don't feel that I am putting anyone down that answered and appreciate your feedback, but if you go against a life threatening with other than equal or greater force leave notice where your bodies are to be buried. Thanks again for all the imput and I have no intention of going anywhere near any tourist island. Been to Nassau and Freeport, would never go back. When and if I go the the Bahamas it will be where there are no tourists, just need a marina. Please take time if you are traveling to most Islands in the Bahamas or Virgin Islands and there are warnings not to be outside of a resort at night. May God (oops sorry didn't want to offend anyone) keep you safe in your travels
Thanks,
Frank
