Wait, there is more...I installed an expensive, full featured Sony stereo in my boat a few years ago. The following Spring I launched the boat, tied it in my slip, plugged in to shore power, and started on my numerous preparation tasks. I noticed that the stereo was on with the face illuminated but no sound. I made a half hearted attempt to shut the thing off but I was unsuccessful, so I just ignored it. In the weeks that followed I made many more attempts to shut it off but never succeeded. The numerous multi-function buttons had Egyptian hieroglyphs in miniature embossed on them to assist the user in determining some of their functions. I eventually found the manual and I was able to shut it down. Seems it required the user to hold a certain secret button down for a particular time length to accomplish turning it off. I gave that stereo away and began an internet search for a simple stereo. After many hours down the rabbit hole I found a bluetooth Fusion stereo that I can just manage. Has a red button that if you press it long enough it shuts the thing off. Remember the old on/off volume knob? Why did they go and improve on that universally understood, fool proof device?

PROGRESS

And the symbol covered little switches are:
  • cheaper to make & install.
  • Some believe they look cool.
  • They consume less space
  • and less power.
Nothing about them being better.

That's why I like vintage stereo gear, with those magnificent, heavy yet smooth tuning knobs that you can give a spin to. Knobs, On/Off/Volume, and some rocker switches.

You know, thinking about it...lots of guitar amp makers are doing "reissues" of their classic tube amps (though they always fail to faithfully reproduce them, like using pcb's instead of eyelet boards, etc.). Maybe Standard Horizon or some other maker could reissue a classic, simple radio with knobs?

If the only thing that is wrong with your "classic" VHF handheld then a rechargeable battery replacement would seem to be the answer. When I had my battery "rebuilt" I simply mailed my old battery pack to them, they put in new batteries (of a higher capacity) with the same chemistry (NiCd) so I could use the existing charger. They were a perfect fit and have worked flawlessly for about 5 years now. It is an old Ray100, probably 15 years or more old. with knobs for on/off and squelch and a flex stub antenna. Single buttons for WX, MON (not sure what that is for but it turns the screen red light), SCAN and a "red button" (not sure what that is for either. Channel changing is by a button too but it is very simple and "waterproof" but I am sure it will not float (it is heavy).

Anybody know what the "MON" button is and what the "Red button" does? I'll see if I can download a manual from online.

My biggest pet peeve when my kids were young was the digital thermometer.
WTF:confused::yikes:

Why take something so fool proof as a thermometer and digitize it. Here is how that plays out...

Your kids wakes up in the middle of the night crying... he feels warm. You want to know if he is warm enough to be alarmed or is it a simple cold. You go to the medicine cabinet for the thermometer.... the battery is dead and/or it is simply not working anymore... did I mention that it is 3 AM... so you drive the 30 min. one way to wallmart for a new thermometer (also digital since you can't find an old-school one) and at 4 AM you determine all is okay and you try to get 90 min of sleep before you have to get up and go to work. About six months later, your daughter wakes up at (lets say) 2 AM crying and feels warm..... and it is time for another trip to wallmart.

I'm guessing I've purchsed at least 5 cheap digital thermometers on a night run when my kids were growing up. What I wouldn't have given for an old-school MERCURY thermometer... you remember? The kind you would shake down and pop in the mouth and they always worked.

.... And my "new" washing machine has more computing power than the Apollo 13 capsule had... and it quit working about a month after the warenty expired. My old machine was 30+ years old and had analog dials. I should have repaired that one and kept it going another 30 years.

Anybody know what the "MON" button is and what the "Red button" does
I'll hazard a guess.
MON is code for Monday... After a wild & crazy Sunday night celebration you wake and press the MON button to request if any one else is up and has made the coffee.

The red button would as a sense of urgency to the need for coffee. It does say "16plus" on the red button. That is confusing... I thought it should be 21Plus..

Darn... I checked the manual and I was not even close.
MON is a key that triggers the mode to be used to "MONITOR" the currently selected working channel and the priority channel.

Ahhh the Red Key... It is the jump to channel 16 (an emergency call button). Remember to read the manual or to randomly test all of the keys.

You can buy the handwired reissues; however, they aren't cheap! :yikes:

Yes, I still hate those damned digital thermometers! Can never figure how to reset them and can never hear the alarm sounding! Doubt if you can even find or buy a mercury thermometer any longer. :(

In an effort toward continuous improvement to idiot-proof everything, , the design departments never fail to reveal themselves as the real idiots.

Which handheld do you recommend?
The one in your hand that works. For me it is the Standard Horizon I have had for 7plus years.

Expectations...
  • I am only looking for basic features. I only use this to contact in sight marinas for slip assignments or launch service.
  • I need clear sound, 5 or 6 watts broadcast power,... REALLY ONLY NEED 1W power to reach a marina in your line of sight. The 5-6 watts is for emergency calls when you are far far away.
  • simple intuitive operation,
  • preferably with knobs and not multi-function buttons, that would Increase the cost.
  • and inexpensive to purchase.
  • What say you?
    • Standard Horizon
HX40 6W Ultra Compact Marine Handheld VHF Transceiver
      Priced about $120.
Ease of operation.

WE have the standard horizon HX 40 as well. Very simple to use and the battery lasts a long time.
Charges very quickly when needed.
I would buy another one in 15 years....

Today I learned my old, bare bones Standard Horizon HX270S has a better receiver than my new, fancy HX890.

Was listening to the new one at home - I'm close to the harbor - and a Coast Guard weather advisory came on over channel 16. I could barely hear it, it was breaking up and scratchy. So I switched that one off and turned on the HX270S, and it was as clear as a bell!

Go figure.

It’s often the rudder duck type antenna which makes the biggest difference.

Score! Someone just gave me an HX270S with a dead battery pack, plus the charging stand and wall adapter.

I just ordered a pack of 3 rechargeable 1800mAh packs on Amazon for $44. (Original packs were 1400 mAh.). We'll see how good they are.

Somewhere in my new house is a box with a couple of these radios, charging stands, and accessories, but Lord knows where!

I love these old radios!

I suspect one reason the newer radios do not measure up is because they are made to float. The manufacturers had to shed weight and the result is an inferior product.
