I wonder if it's a coastal thing, very few boats in s. Calif. are bonded, Lightning is also rare compared to other regions.
I'm guessing it's a corrosion thing too. If you have no 'earth' the you can't set up an anode and cathode and the voltages/currents that would cause metal migration due to a battery effect.

There' a few good write ups about zincs so I'm not going to try and re-write it here.

There's nothing on our H336 that ties anything to the keel, but I've seen it on larger Hunters. I just assumed there was some size or price point above which the factory was willing to spend the extra money. I've never bothered to do it myself because everything I've read on the subject has convinced me that grounding your mast to the ocean in such a manner actually increases your chance of being hit by lightning, but lowers your risk of damage if you are.

Here's an example of a DC-DC converter:

My 2005 33 has cable running from all the plates and bolted to the keel. As far as I know all the new generation have this.

No TV for us! We never had a TV in our camper either. We catch up on reading and conversation. Not that anything is wrong with a TV on the boat, it's just not for us.

The USB tuner needs to be connected to an antenna and doesn't use the phone or the internet, but has to be within range of a station just as a normal TV would have to be.

The tuner is just that. Look at it as the same as a tuner in a normal TV set but instead of having a viewing screen it is using the computer's monitor to display the picture.

I was talking to Ruth about this the other day when this thread started. I'll bet almost all of the TV's today have a tuner section that isn't much larger than the USB device unlike all of those tubes and such us old guys remember. Besides the tuner they still need an audio component to power the speakers. There again the USB tuner relies on the computers audio component and its speaker or as we do, connect the computers audio output to an external speaker that has an amplifier.

We really like these ....

.... small speakers with fairly large sound and use them also with the I-pod on the boat and at home. Batteries last fairly long in them,

Cootlam, Sumner's advice is good - no impact on your cellular data, and no need to connect to the internet except perhaps at installation to update the software they ship with the unit

... he he I remember going with my dad to the local store with a handful of tubes out of our TV to use the store's tube tester.

Ethernet tuner

All this talk of tuners got me thinking about whether there was an Ethernet option. Here is a device that can attach to your antenna and then to a computer network. Any device on the network can get tv, limited to two channels at any given time.

What would be really slick is if someone like Glomex could mount a Tuner inside of their antenna and using Power Over Ethernet(like a Ubuquiti Bullet) feed the signal down to a network device. No need for signal boosters.
