Trouble replacing hose from engine to muffler

I believe I need to replace the hose running from my engine to my muffler. The piece in question is very short and rigid and I don't see how I can get the old one out and the new one in.

I have enclosed a picture. It is taken after I took out the aft seat around the dining table. The hose in question goes vertically from the muffler (it's the hose on the starboard side, the left most one on the picture) to the engine (Universal M3-20). It actually connects with a hose wrapped in foil. The foil hose and the muffler are solid in place. I suspect each has a 1-2 inch coupling extension. The hose I'm taking out is maybe 7 inches long and very rigid. I don't see how I can get it out without breaking it. I don;t see how I could get a new one in to replace it.

What am I missing?
-should I just brute force it in and out?
-Can I move the muffler?
-Can I move the foil covered hose coming from the engine?
-Is there another way?

A little background on why I am in the predicament. You may notice the hose I am worried about appears to have shrivelled up. Yesterday I ran my engine for about half an hour with the raw water outflow seacock closed. My engine alarm went off and I shut the engine down. It looks like I boiled all the coolant and it ended up in the bilge. After I let the engine cool I refilled the coolant. I opened the seacock and was lucky enough to be able to start the engine and limped home at idle speed. The temperature stayed steady. Water was being expelled out the back. I intend to inspect the impeller. I may find other damage but the only thing that looks damaged now is the hose. I don't think the hose looked like that before the overheating and I don't think I should use the engine with the hose looking like that.

A little more background. I just upgraded to this boat from a Catalina 25 with a swing keel. This is my first post to the forum. I love my new 30. It is so much more stable in the water and points much better. I'm excited about my future adventures. I bought the boat in Gig Harbor near Tacoma Washington. Here is a photo essay (in case you are interested) of my adventure bringing the new boat home to Vancouver BC.

I hope the cross post is okay. I posted the same question on the yahoo 30 group. I'm not sure which one to use. I'm surprised Catalina 30 owners would be spilt into two forums this way.

Just replaced mine. Lubricant the inside of the hose with soap and use a heat gun to heat the hose and make it more pliable. Good luck.

Never, ever, use that type of hose in that location again.

Go to www.catalinadirect.com and buy HUMP HOSE, 1 5/8" diameter. Use that. It's pliable and will allow you to install it and, as a bonus, it keeps the lip of your muffler intact. That old black hose transmits too much vibration.

I know you don't have an M25 engine, but there are tons of handy tips & tricks for you there.

While it is unfortunate that the C30 material is not all in one handy neat place, part of the reason is that since the boats started production so long ago, things have changed over the years. Many of us frequent a number of different boating forums everyday. Our C34 website does have stuff all in one place, and we share almost identical systems, so please feel free to use it anytime.

You could also check out www.catalina30.com for archived C30 info.

Congratulations on your new boat.

David,
First congratulations on your new boat! Don't beat yourself up too much. I think all of us will admit to forgetting to open that seacock at some point. You do it once and you never forget again

Stu is absolutely right about the hump hose being the way to go. I did it when I replaced the motor mounts on my boat. I had to cut the old hose out. On my engine (25XP) the exhaust manifold had to be removed to install the new hose which had to be cut down to fit. If you do have to remove the exhaust manifold soak the bolts for a week in PB Blaster and you'll need to pick up a gasket kit (also Catalina Direct). I'd also order the correct stainless clamps. That's not a hose you want to fail.

Here's what it looks like installed

It's an awkward spot to work, so go slow and allow yourself plenty of time and you'll be fine.

And again best of luck with your new boat,
Jim

Also don't forget about the Catalina 30 sailboat owners group on facebook. :)

Something I learned from an old hand is "there is nothing you can break that you can not fix." On my boat you can unbolt the muffler from the wood block that is tabbed to the hull and move it about after removing the output hose. Looking at your photo I would hesitate to move the engine hot pipe and mixer as it looks aged and may be corroded. If you do need rebuild the hot section you can buy sched 40 iron pipe from McMaster Carr and an new mix elbow and pipe wrap from Moyer Marine, I built a new hot section in about an hour, easy, as stated above the hardest part is the manifold connection.
