Trailering a '93 c28

I am considering buying a 1993 shoal draft std rig c28 which I think we would have to occasionally trailer due to storms, lack of decent moorings or dockage in our area of fla. Condos have taken nearly all our available marinas, dockage has become outrageously expensive and our mooring fields are exposed and full. We are trailering a 24' hunter but want a more capable boat that could still be pulled out incase of a storm/hurricane, loss of docking rights or needs repair. Is the '93 c28 too impossible to consider such a role at 8600lb without a lift? Been shopping tandem and tri axle trailers at 5-6k$ and have a suburban capable to pull it short distances and (I think)a ramp to float the boat on the trailer at high tide with a short extension. I've seen people consider trailering such a boat on the trailer sailor BB but can't quite get this in my head. Any input on people/sailors who pull and successfully ramp launch such a large boat? Are upgrade parts available like tabernacle hinges and gin poles or will I do better to fabricate them locally if we do this at all? All input welcome. Thanks Michael Smith

Yes, it is too big

you need permit because of the beam. You not putting it in at a ramp either. You should look at the C250 or a H260.

No,its not to big.

We trailered our C27 for 8 years (including lengthy trips over the Rocky Mountains), with ramp laumching and recovery. Over the years at our marina of the time, we had C27's, San Juan 28's, Mirage 30's, C310's and Ericson 32's all doing the same. With a little fore-thought and engineering help the trailing, launching and recovery (we used a 20ft collapsable trailer tongue extension) are an easily overcome task. The diffaculty is the stepping of the mast. The weight, length, and sheer awkwardness of the mast make it a task best left to experienced persons and proven systems. Some places have a mast raising pole or a picker truck available and others have nothing, you may want to contact the marinas you plan on visiting beforehand to evaluate their facilities. I know it sounds a little foreboding and there are a lot of nay sayers out there, but, experience has taught me that with some carefull planning it can be done safely and without to much diffaculty. Best of Luck, Echo Gulf

Echo, your a better man than me. That is too much work! I could see doing it one time a year, in then out, but that is too much for me. You must a a very patient wife.

Experience counts

Thanks for the feedback. It certainly is done more often than most people expect. We have been trailer sailors with our 24' Hunter for years and are proficient at the trailering systems and pitfalls so this certainly isn't scary or something we've never experienced just bigger and more time consuming. We know from experience that the 250/260 are just not safely up to extended cruising to the Tortugas or Abacos/Bahamas. We also understand the limitations of such requests of a C28 but feel it is a much more capable boat. I suppose the biggest change will be keeping the C28 in one place as long as possible with a longer 2-3 hour setup, where we can now use our 24 like a daysailor with a 30min setup. I guess it's all a trade off. Convienience vs stability and roominess. Thanks again Michael and Kelli

C-28 trailer detail

Tj Could you please email us with some details on trailering your C28. A couple pics would be a real help. Trailer detail, mast stepping hardware and base hinge. Found a reasonable slip near a jetty to the gulf but also heard yesterday that our hellish red tide is coming back for another go. A trailer would at least bring it home to the shop during this event and hurricane season. We're outside our regular sailing season so the timing is at least ok. Thanks for your positive insight. trailering / mast raising

Attention TJ Any chance we could trade email adds? We have a Capri 26, now at our house, and want to construct a "successful" mast raising system on it. As we don't live to far from Portland OR maybe you could give us a "show and tell" some day? Thanks much, Bruce
