By chance I called the local hardware store, the old mom and pop place, and what do you know, stainless steel all the way up to 3/4 x 12.

I will keep BWY in mind for future needs, I just finished installing the new bolts.

Thanks again for the info

Glad to hear you have it solved.

Nice to have a local supplier, $4 worth of bolts would probably cost $9 to ship.

And now a know where to stock up on spares.

The hole for the lock down bolt is over sized on one side and slotted on the other due to the PO using the wrong size bolt an not actually using it, just dropping the keel against it.

I can do a fiberglass repair or install bronze bushings to fix it. I trailer the boat most of the time and only use it in fresh water.

Pros/cons on either method? I will be using the lock down bolt.

Both sides of my V-222 were slotted out by about 2 inches when I got her. Either method that you mentioned should work fine. Both would likely require lowering the keel to drill a properly aligned bolt hole. I had to drive an hour and a half away and launch the boat to lower the keel and ended up doing one side at a time. The main issues that I see is that the bushings may be harder to seal from leaks.

When we were in San Diego the end of June our 1976 Honda outboard kept dying on us. When it did it was difficult to get started again. After messing with it for a while I gave up and took it to an outboard mechanic. He basically did the same things that I did and gave it a clean bill of health. After that it died on me several times again. All in all I spent 6 days of our 10 day vacation working on the outboard. I worked on it again over the long weekend and finally got it to where it would keep running but if I shut it off I couldn't get it to start again without letting it cool down first. Once it was cooled down it started easy. I suspect that the 40 year old coil is bad but I'm not anxious to pay $120 for a new one just to find out that it didn't fix the problem. So we decided to bite the bullet and order a new outboard.

I converted my Honda to operate with a remote throttle and shifter and wanted another outboard that came with that feature. (Didn't feel like reinventing the wheel again.) The only ~10hp outboards I could find with a remote are Suzuki so we ordered a Suzuki DF9.9BTX. It comes with remote, power tilt, efi, electronic ignition, high thrust propeller, 25" shaft, electric start, and a few other features.

Hopefully our next trip will be better.

Nice, Soundwave!

I worked on my fuel tank/system trying to get it figured out. It won't stay running under load unless I keep pumping the bulb. I moved the tank closer to the outboard, replaced all fuel line, new bulb, and eliminated a bulkhead fitting.

The Attwood hose has a clear plastic lining inside the hose that seemed to have separated and may have been causing a restriction. I didn't notice it until after I had replaced it with the same hose. Do you think that it was caused by Ethanol in the fuel? I can replace it with regular fuel hose if needed. My marina now carries no-ethanol fuel, so I pulled my tank to drain and clean out so I can refill with the good stuff.

Have you considered installing an electric fuel pump? that would eliminate pumping all together.

Not seriously, I don't want to have to depend on electric power for my motor to run. I think my 2009 Mercury 9.9 four stroke has a built in pump. I'm not an outboard whiz, but know that having to continuously pump is not the norm. I had this problem last year, but thought it was due to the bulb orientation (perfectly level) so I tried it straight up and at an angle. Never had any issues with the 5hp Tohatsu on my 22.

Fond the local Coast Guard fueling station. They don't use ethanol mix fuel. Usually it is a public dock.

One outboard I had would keep stopping if the bulb pump was in direct sun light and got hot.. ??? Reminds me I need to change the water pump this fall. Then thinking about the water pump and things I really don’t like to do reminded me that I also need to re-do the bottom paint.. Still, its messing with the boat so OK..

I hear ya, Walt. I didn't get to the bottom paint this year and finally decided it was more important to get on the water.

I absolutely agree. When we got our first Macgregor I was ready to sail as soon as she was seaworthy. My wife said "I'm not going in that boat until we get it painted." Needless to say I sailed a few times without her.

Finally finished installing my new 9.9 HP Suzuki outboard with remote control, electric start, power tilt, high thrust prop, electronic fuel injection, etc...

I also installed the linkage so that the outboard steers with the main tiller. Getting anxious to try it out in two weeks.

Ethanol fuel is not even legal in boats (at least here). If a marina is selling ethanol on the water they could lose their privilege to sell. Some owners try to save money and sell it without saying its ethanol. It causes more problems than it is worth. Not as detrimental to two strokes as the oil mix prevents corrosion from the ethanol. Until the current administration it was against the law to dispense ethanol over 10 percent in CARS built before 2001. Those laws have been put to rest now. Most pumps in Georgia vary between ten and twenty-two percent, but many stations are advertising ethanol free. Fuel mileage is better with gasoline as it contains more stored energy than ethanol. In the last decade ,fuel related damage to vehicles has skyrocketed. Old rubber lines are easily damaged by that junk. It is extremely corrosive ( all late model fuel systems are all stainless lines because of problems with rust). If the new fuel line doesn't fix it, there is probably some trash in your float bowl. If you do use ethanol try an enzyme like star-tron to minimize fuel problems. Hope some of this helps, and happy sailing!

Thanks for the info, MisterR6. Went out to the boat and loaded stuff, filled the tank with ethanol-free gas and connected the lines. If the weather cooperates we hope to get back out tomorrow and I'll know where things stand.
