Just like naming our children

Seriously, we spent as much time naming our boat as we spent naming our children. We did really consider a lot of names. Since we are both teachers, the children's names always brought to mind a student we were happy about. You know...either happy to see them come into the room or happy to see them leave the room! At least the boat doesn't complain about the name we chose or say 'I wish my name was....'. We spent nearly a year working on restoring our boat in our back yard. That meant that she was a short walk away from the house at all times and a constant reminder of the many, many jobs that needed to be completed. One day while covered in epoxy and wearing the clothes that had paint, saw dust, and bedding compound all over them I reflected a bit on the work we did. I asked my wife whether she thought sailing was a waste of time or time well spent. Without a second's hesitation she said, "I don't know dear, but I think you just named your boat!" We thought that "Time Well Spent" would be the winner, but if you like the sound of it you may use it on your boat. We have always liked horses and have cared for and ridden several over the years. We finally descided that we would combine our memory of those wonderful animals with a love for adventure on the water so we settled on the name "Seahorse". By the way, it fit well on the transome too. That was a real concern because we live in Schuylkill Haven, Pa and thought that a three word name would be too many letters on the back of the boat! Boat name

Everyone knows that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water into which one throws money, so we named the boat KaChing.

Original Sailbad the Sinner was (is?)

a wooden hulled two masted schooner on the Great Lakes....about 60', home built with telephone poles for masts and painted black from stem to stern. I first saw her in 1967 at Port Huron MI...she'd been around for years then. Like many highly creative boat names that have been collected and published in books of names, there are now other "Sailbad the Sinner"s out there..."Mama's Mink" is another one from the 50's that's been used and over-used. IMO, it's a shame that any books of boat names have ever been published...they only allow people who have no imagination to steal from those who do. It's obvious from this thread that no one needed to steal someone else's originality, though.

Boat Name

The name of our boat Sanmitsu - our children were stationed in Okinawa with the Air Force at the time - we had all studied martial arts together and we wanted a name that was unique. Sanmitsu as one word means 'the three secrets' which is a concept of achieving harmony in life by achieving harmony in the three disciplines of thought, word, and deed. But, also taken apart into the 2 kanji SAN meaning 3, and MITSU meaning water, we can also say it represents the three waters that we have sailed, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake St. Clair.

S.S. POOH

I had to change the name. I looked at 5 or 6 used boats and the SS POOH was not my first choice partly because of the name and a large picture of winnie himself in a little boat painted on each side of the bow. In the end I got the best deal on the POOH and now I'm in the middle of getting the old name and graphic off. I agonized over the new name for weeks, carried lists and boucing suggestions off family and friends. I plan on living aboard so I wanted it to reflect the change in my life. As a kid I was known as Brian the lion so I used that and came up with 'Lion's Den'. If I wasn't worried about trying to spit out the name in an emergency over the VHF I would have gone with 'Mometary Lapse of Reason'.

Midlife Crisis

Back in 1992, I took a refresher ASA sailing certification course, and my wife attended my final practical exam on the water. When it was (smartly) completed, my wife, said, "Gee, you really sail quite well." I figured it was as good a time as any to tell her that I had already purchased a used J-25. When she heard that, she said, "Are you having a Midlife Crisis?" And that is how my previous sailboat got her name.

Sight Unseen

Since I bought the boat sight unseen and it was a bigger boat than previously owned, I was torn between naming the boat "Size Matters" or "Sight Unseen". My male sailing buddy really thinks size matters, but I know better. So she was named "Sight Unseen" since that is really how she was purchased and was shipped from Youngstown, New York to Cape May, NJ. No one was disappointed upon delivery and recommissioning.

Feelin Alright

A song by my favorite band guy Dave Mason is called "Feelin Alright" which is the way we feel when we push off the dock and head out into the bay.

Brian, an obvious Pink Floyd fan

Brian, at least you didn't name you boat "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict" (Pink Floyd Album Ummagumma). The Coast Guard would then most likely transfer you to a game warden.

Spyhop

New name for a no name

I had purchased a Seafarer 23 shortly after the birth of our grandson. The Seafarer had never been named in its previous 20 years so it needed a name. Having recently read the book about the whaling ship Essex, I had whaling terms on my mind. My grandson would rouse himself from sleep with a little sound and open one eye as he raised his head to look around and survey his world. I made the comment that he seemed to be spyhopping and my wife thought that would be an excellent name for the new boat. I agreed and Spyhop she became.

boat name

My previous boat was named whatever IV. People would pass by and yell whatever for? My standard reply was why not. Now my new boat is named Y knot. It wasn't named, so I didn't need a cerimony.

Sea Dog, I had to justify my boat's past ;)

Since my Hunter 54 was a former Drug boat in what I think was the Florida / Carribean area. I had to be true to it's past. I choose Sea Dog since it was used in "Treasure Island" as is an English nickname for Pirate. Though I lowered the rather HIGH WATERLINE an inch, I think it is still rather high. I didn't want any scumline stains on my Imron ;)

Serenity says it all.

I liked the name before I saw the boat. In fact when I saw the boat laid up for the winter in Chicago I was a bit concerned that it did not look like the serene pictures I had seen on the web. But I liked the name Serenity enough that I didn't want to change it. Additionally, I was told when I bought my first dingy, used, 27 yrs earlier that it was bad luck to change a boat's name. I did and my sailing luck could have been better. I learned my lesson. This is our second season in Serenity and I couldn't be more pleased.

A 13 year promise remembered

At the birth of my fifth grand child I asked my daughter-in-law how the little girl's name was spelled. She replied CHRISTY ANNE. I said immediately "What a pretty name. That's what I'll call my next sail boat." It was taken as a promise. On Christy Anne Pierce's 13 birthday, amid an extended family gathering at the Knox Lake Family Retreat, she christened my O'Day Mariner the Christy Anne. A pretty name for a pretty boat.

RU HAPPY DARLING ??

I bought my Legend 310 with the name Rebel.Whilst the name was Ok there are already 3 "Rebels" in Dublin Bay.knowing that changing a boats name can be dagerous (old superstition) I decided to "cheat " and use the same letters with a few others to get a suitable name.I learned my sailing in Cork Harbour which is on the river Lee.Ivan the terrible was alegend and I enjoy stupid old B&W movies where one often sees David Niven asking a Lady on a balcony looking out to sea "are you happy darling?2... The standard answer is "TERRIBLY"!!! My boats is now named "TEREBLEE"..which also incidentally appropriatley answers the question "Is sailing an expesive hobby?!!!

My boy named the boat

My then 2 1/2 year old named the boat for me. Tony's first ride on the boat involked a cheer of "GO DADDY!" when we raised the sails and took off. I knew right then that was the best possible name. Now if I just could find a reasonable deal on some vinyl lettering...

Sheet Music

Two of the passions in my life are my 2001 Hunter 260 and my music. It seemed only natural to find a way to blend the two and Sheet Music was the result. The name always gets a smile from folks who know me and have listened to me perform especially at the marina. My daughter gave me a plaque to commemorate the boat's maiden voyage which says in part "may she always carry a tune on the wind." That says it all. Hope that one gives you goose bumps Diane! Soledad

I liked the name Soledad (example: Soledad O'bryan on one of the network morning shows). It is Spanish for "alone" or "solitude". It was too weird for my wife to let me name our daughter that, so once I (err we) decided to get the boat, what better name could I have come up with? Soledad 2003 Hunter 260 Jacksnoville, FL
