Larger Than Wife

My younger son, who considers himself quite a comedian failed to make points with his mother when he suggested we name our Hunter 40.5- Larger Than Wife and the dinghy- Smaller Than Wife. I named the boat Diana after my wife but secretly I did find David's suggestion amusing. Robert Hall Victoria B.C. Canada

"Tenacity" fit the boat

Before buying my boat I spent alot of time trying to decide what to name it. When I found my Capri 26 "Tenacity" I liked the boat and I liked the name so I kept it......

Confusion

Owning a boat is always full of confusing emotions and experiences. Weather (not enough wind, too much wind), rocks (ouch, that rock wasn't there yesterday), mechanical problems, dealing with boat yards, provisining, cruise planning, etc. How about "Mast Confusion" the name of my new 356

Fortitude

We bought our C27 last fall and it was named "Fortitude". Its not what we would have chosen but we can live with it and besides its in 6 inch letters on both sides of the hull which would probably show up anyway even if we removed it. The boat was previously state registered but we have chosen to document the vessel. The name will not change but we are changing the hailing port. A friend has given us a bottle of champaigne, we will add some wine and beer and have a proper ceremoney to appease Posiedien (sp, I've probably made him mad already) in the event he is concerned about changing hailing ports. But, a gathering with friends is the most important part.

"Breaking Wind"

My first Hunter was bought used and was named ORION for the hunter constellation. By the time I bought my 336 new in 1996 I had invested so much in hats, shirts, rugs, mats, jackets and more with ORION embroidered on them I couldn't see spending the money to replace them all with "Breaking Wind." Oh, yeah. My wife would have keelhauled me, which was another consideration.

WAKE-ROBIN II

0ur Appalachaian heritage contributed to our boat's name. In the early spring, the first flowers to bloom are the Wake-Robins - a trillium that blooms in profusion in our mountains. Since we planned to follow in the wake of the Sea Adventurers, we felt it was an appropriate name for our boat. We recently christened our new/old boat Wake-Robin II with an appropriate naming ceremony. It will be complete when it sports a picture of the flower for which it is namedon the transom. PS We live and work aboard our boat. Check out how on the link below.

Something Fishy

I raise tropical fish for a hobby and everything on the boat has a fish theme so we named her "Something Fishy" There's even an undersea mural painted in the head. The fabric for the cushions is all colorful fish, the towels, the plates and cups, the pillows, just about everything is fish-related. The only time I regretted the name was after a particular club race when I was treated to a: "I smell Something Fishy" retort. Now that I race better, the joke has gone away... LOL Good Sailing!

Mahina Kai

I do think the hardest task in acquiring a boat is naming her. I think there are two requirements you need to understand when selecting a name. 1) Everyone at the marina will call you by your boat name. "Oh look here comes <boat name>”. 2) At some point in your boating history you will have a conversation with the Coast Guard on the radio and will include your boat name. Taking those two requirements into consideration we settled on Mahina Kai. My understanding is that Mahina Kai is Hawaiian and means moon over sea. One of our first vacations together was a back packing trip to the north coast of Kauai. When we weren't sleeping in tents we stayed at a small place of the same name. So our first vacation and our ongoing leisure time, share a common name. We did have a proper naming ceremony for her when she was launched. The ceremony involved a beautiful woman sponsor, some of our closest friends and some really nice champagne! -wayne

GiGi

The name of the boat that I purchased was called Arius. My 4 year old daughter changed the name of the boat to "GiGi" in honor of her grandmother who passed away due to cancer last year. We have not officially made the change on the boat, but that is coming soon and of course the official boat name changing ceremony. It is cool to see some of the names of everyones boats on here.

New, old and borrowed

For the baby blue Macgregor, my partner and his wife wanted something light and melodic; they chose Lyra, after the constellation of the lyre. (Their second boat was Encora, an Italian play on encore and anchor.) When a distressed Cal 2-29 found me and Steve, an old friend, she was already named Kefi. It sounded Greek, but we liked the sound of it, and besides, her identity seemed quite firm already. Half a year later, we were delighted to learn that Kefi apparently means 'fun'. The dinghy is Nancy (Dawson), "a popular ship name that came from a dancer in John Gay's The Beggars Opera. The tune she danced to was popular with seamen during the 18th century..". s/v Lyra, 77 V-222 s/v Kefi, 73 Cal 2-29 s/v Nancy, 8.5' Puffin sailing dink

Named in Honor!

We named our (new to us) old boat after Dottie's dad who wanted us to have a boat again after our children had grown up. He gave us the boat, and we named it "Magee" in honor of him. Someday we may get to take him out for a sail! That would be wonderful!

HAve a new boat need a new name

I now have two boats, a 320 is replacing the beloved 27. Her / His name was "Foray" There were four in our family and all our names started with 'A' Foray was duplistic in meaning,ie; a foray on the the water with the four "A"s And our logo was Four Rays. Did we go a little to far? Now I have a 320 that needs a Name and Now there are only three of us, Help!

Silent Knight -

Actually it was an English teacher who gave me the idea for my 3rd boat after hearing that I always had my name in the boat's name (The Knight, II Knight and finally Silent Knight). It has struck a cord with many spectators and also makes a great Christmas Card. I use Old English Script for all name boards. And it is easy to discern in radio calls and conversation. A little music goes a long way.

Life Philosophy

My C26 (1986 SK SR) is named "Sailing The Blues" because that's kind of what life is all about. When I had to come up with a name for my corporation (I already had a dba), I thought, I can name it anything I like. So, what do I like? Well, I like Jazz, and the Blues, and I like Sailing. So, I came up with Sailing The Blues, Inc. And since my business owns the boat, and since Sailing has a LOT to do with easing the blues, then I named my boat, Sailing The Blues. You see, imagine that Bleeding Gums Murphy was telling you about the blues. You see, everyone's got the blues. We all got stuff we's working through, y'know what I mean? And life is about where the winds of life take you. And you got to make the best of where those winds take you.. That's life, Sailing the Blues.!!" Yes I did offer a rather nice de-naming (and re-naming) ceremony because I wanted to keep the boat in good graces with Posiedon, and Neptune.

Boat name

My last boat was named "Bad Attitude" because that's what my ex- said my daughter had...and threw her into a mental hospital. I bailed ehr out...took her to Kauai on vacation...and she eventually graduated from high school living with me on Kauai... The daughter agreed that it would be a great name for the MacGregor 25.

Uncle George

When I bought my CAL 2-27, I renamed it "Uncle George" after my great uncle and avid sailor that lived in Akron, Ohio. He and his wife, Ruth, sailed and raced an Interlake dinghy on Turkey Foot Lake, near Akron, well into their eighties. I named my Avon inflatable "Aunt Ruth" as she was always lots of fun and sometimes a little "dinghy". I thought giving the boat a male name as a bit unique. The best point about the name is it always comes across loud and clear when hailed over the radio.

"Smiles"

My husband doesn't do water at all! But he is the kindest man a woman can have. He decided to buy me a sail boat--but he reserved the right to name the boat. We found a 1988 MacGregor 26 a really great boat! SMILES is the name of the boat for two reasons. One being the SMILE this boat puts on my face every time I go out on her. Having never sailed before she is very forgiving. And two, my husband had a real good friend that was retiring from the military and when they asked him what he was going to do after he retired he said "I'm going to buy a boat and have an all female crew, and the uniform of the day is a SMILE" Here's to a great husband, good friends and (to steal Tom Keough' name) Breaking Wind! I'm glad my husband didn't think of that one!! By the way this boat has an all female crew and we sail the waters of the Puget Sound, Gods country. We are so fortunate to have these beautiful and sometimes challenging waters flanked by some of the most awesome mountain ranges in the great U.S.A.. Thanks to the troops for keeping the peace and our freedom to move around the country as we choose!

The "T" is the first initial of our family name and there are 7 of us.

Bluey

We have two sailboats, the one we call Seventstoo, which is in Florida and we have a 1970, 26' Grampian here in Canada. We retained the name "Bluey" because the ship is registered. However, the previous owner was a spitfire pilot in the Battle of Britain, second war, and he named the boat after his budgie.
