I would like to upgrade my single handed enjoyment and add a couple Spinlock Powercleat (SPNPX0821) for the jib lines as well as on for my main sheet (SPNPXB0821). I'm having a difficult time finding these parts anywhere. In the archives there is a lot of info about this modification but the post are from 2003 and 2004. Do they not make these items anymore? Did they not work as advertised? If anyone has any info on these I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Thanks Rick, looks like they upgraded the model number from SPNPX0821 to this PXR0810. Same rope size. Anyone use the swivel base model?

The one I really want is the Spinlock for the main sheet. It's # was SPNPXB0821. Anyone know what it is now? Does the B indicate a base plate to attach to the main pulley's?

Use the Swivel base on my 23.5.Work great since I solo mostly can release and cleat jib from either side of cockpit.Only problem I had was releasing under real strong load, but solved that by waiting a little longer for load to relax. during tack

We use the PXRs on both of our boats. The are great anywhere you would have used an old-school clam cleat. I would NOT use them in place of a clutch. So for often adjusted hand loads like vangs and twings, yes. Halyards, NO.

I used the PXR swivelling power cleats on my last Catalina 22 for the jib sheets. I loved them. Super easy to adjust and release.

Some folks warned me that a captured sheet was bad in case of emergency. I admit, the thought of a captured line can make you nervous at times, but at the same time having the line captured means it can't get away from you. In an oh-s#!t moment of the sheets get jammed, a rigging knife is an easy fix to the issue.

I will recommend sizing your power cleat and line so that the line is the smallest diameter that the power cleat is designed for. You want your sheets to fly through on release; if you use the max line size for the cleat it will not flow through the cleat as easily; this from experience.

I started with max sheet diameter when I installed my Spinlocks and was unhappy with responsiveness of the sheets. When I went to the smallest for the cleat, it worked fine and I had no more problems.

If you install then knowing when and how they might let you down, and have a contingency plan for if they ever do, I think you wil lfind they are super nice for handling sheet loads for a small boat.

I would not use them for halyards.

Agree with Phil on the line size. Tried the PXR0810 (8-10mm) with my 3/8" sheets, and there was too much friction even though they are rated for 3/8" line. I didn't want to replace my sheets, so returned them before installing. Wish they came a little larger.

I'm thinking of placing mine as far aft as I can on the cabin top and going with a swivel base.

Is their a big enough advantage to go with the swivel base? Anyone who does not have a swivel wish they did? Any negatives with the swivel base?

My Spinlocks arrived! I purchased two each with a swivel base. I was able to get out into the yard as the weather is finally cooperating. Because of the off set companionway on the 260, I'm a little puzzled as to where to place these puppies: especially on the starboard side.

If anyone with a 260 or 240 has pictures I would love to see them.

It seems as though I will require a spacer block if I place them by the original jam cleats. I pictured placing them closer to the back edge of the companionway. Any more input on their placement would be greatly appreciated.

They make an adapter plate so that you can mount them right on top of the existing cam cleats. I don't have pictures with me right now, but I will send you some this weekend if you still need them.

That would be great Darren. I'm heading home from work this week and I'm planning on building those spacers next weekend. I'm going to make a prototype out of wood and once I'm happy with the performance, I'll machine them out of aluminum or some plastic (UHMW).

You can also do a google search for spin lock power cleat adapter plate. http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|619045|1970777&id=1779087 The link posted about was one result I found. Just remove the screws from each side of the cam right out, screw the power cleat onto the adapter plate and the adapter plate back on to your existing clam. I liked this option because it raises them up and did not require me to put any new holes in the boat.

I do recall having to use a pretty good snap motion to get them to release. But it was much better than having to go up and hold the line down to get into into the clam cleat which was minted to low from the factory.

If I remember correctly there was a wedge or spacer required to elevate the spinlock so that you had enough clearance to pull down on the line to lock it. I put a spinlock on the mainsheet years ago. The only issues I have are in light winds its hard to cleat without also holding the mainsheet to create tension. Sometimes its hard to uncleat depending on the angle, I use my foot to push down on the mainsheet to unlock it. Those are minor issues though, just something to be aware of. Also bought the spinlocks for the jib sheets but never installed them.

Ashley is correct. Add spacers so they are elevated upwards or you will have trouble pulling them thru and locking the lines into position. Former Hunter dealer.

Never heard from Ashley in the past I think. Oh heck, I am loosing my memory.

Spinlock Powercleats

I installed PXR0810/T cleats (mounting holes cross vs. inline) for the main- and jib sheet. It needed a little modification on the main sheet purchase to mount the power cleat but they were fitting as direct replacement for the jib clam cleats.
As main sheet I use a 5/16" XLS line. Have a new 3/8" jib sheet but may have to replace it also to a 5/16" line. Not practically tested it yet.

Hart,

What I have read is that these power cleats work best with sheets that are at the lower end of the power cleats capacity. I'll be curious to see how yours works. I did not put one on my main sheet because they do not make one that accepts the thickness of my main sheet. I should consider going to a thinner sheet but mine is so comfortable.

I noticed in your picture that you do not have a riser mod to your main sheet. I was struggling with mine releasing and biting in light winds. Someone sent me a mod to raise up the clamps of the main sheet (your power cleat) about 18". This puts it in a position where it becomes much easier to set and release.

I attached the best picture I have of mine. I don't have the mainsheet in this picture but it shows my riser lying on the cockpit floor. It is a length of chain that has a plastic cover on it (yellow color in the picture). One end is secured to the hook mounted on the cockpit floor. The other end attaches to the main sheet (where you see the red bungee hook attached). It really made a noticeable difference for me.

Main sheet riser

shanker,
Thank you for the tip, great idea. I had always to go and put a foot on the line to release the main sheet cleat. What a hassle, hoped for some improvement with the power cleat and 5/16" line.
Such a good and simple solution to rise up the cleat. I will take a line with two bowline knots to rise the cleat up, that must do the trick. Is there something specific on the market or does everyone just improvise? Thanks again, I am exited about this solution.
