Should a keel trunk have any flex to it?

That should all be plenty strong. You didn't buy this boat for a circumnavigation.

What I would do is check carefully again the structure that goes from the side stays (shrouds) across the boat. When you're sailing, the mast is being pushed down (compressed). The stays are under tension. This would squeeze the sides of the hull together if the deck wasn't there. If you are worried about rot in the deck, consider some more reinforcement just under the deck across the boat.

In your rigging check, look at every bolt and screw. The stainless is old enough that it could be eaten away by crevice corrosion. Also look carefully at the spreaders where they attach to the mast.

It's great you've got the rig tuned. If you need a guide, Selden has a good one (called Hints and Advice")

crystal river is about an hour and a half north of tampa fl. was about 85 here today. I was sweating my butt off while rebedding the pulpit and other misc hardware!!! I am busy the next two weekends with camping and parents visiting but after that ITS ON!!

RGRANGER: I appreciate the kind words. appearance was not the goal but I figured after all the time I spent strengthening everything, I might as well make it look a little better too!!

carlf: I am not worried about rot in the deck at all... I am actually 100% confident.... 100% confident it is rotten that is!!!! I have done some bracing to keep it from flexing when being walked on and from the factory there is a brace side to side just forward of the shrouds so I am thinking it is in ok shape in that regards, I will be keeping any eye on it the first several trips though. the rigging advice is much appreciate as that is not something that I would have looked at as closely ( I just checked for frays and obvious blemishes). I also know that the rigging is far from in perfect tune, but it is MUCH better than it was and I will continue to fine tune it as I learn more about it.

Hey Hawk

Do you have a copy of this book?

http://www.amazon.com/Caseys-Complete-Illustrated-Sailboat-Maintenance/dp/0071462848

I presently have four sailboats in my yard and I'm in the process of restoring my 6th old rotten boat.... so I fully understand the sickness :)

I'm sailing a Rhodes 26 right now that I redid last year and I have a Rhodes 22 that I picked up for $250. It was probably only worth $280 :) But it had a new sail. Anyway...

If you do not have a copy of this book, I highly recommend it. It answers all kind of questions, like.. how do I fix that hole in the hull?... or how do I replace a rotten deck core?.... etc. etc. It is fully illustrated with very nice step by step pictures of the processes. I've used quite a few tricks from this book.

Fair winds and have fun fixing her up....

looks like an excellent reference for anyone working on a sailboat! I do not have that one (yet) but I do have his books on inspecting the aging sailboat, sailboat electrical and sailboat refinishing. I haven't read much in them except for the aging sailboat.

I think the one I referenced is a compilation of five of his books, re-indexed and paginated. So you probably already have 3/5th of this one.

Another potential rig problem - and very common in boats as old as yours - is crevice corrosion in the chain plates. What happens is the caulking around the chain plate keeps the oxygen from getting to the stainless steel of the chain plate below the deck level causing corrosion. The chain plate can break off without warning. The best thing to do is to unbolt and pull the chain plates for inspection - but this can be a lot of work.

Here's an excellent piece that shows pictures of different types of rig corrosion.

Man y'all are terrific, thanks carlf! I was already going to be pulling all the chain plates in the next couple of weeks for re bedding purposes, I will make sure to look extra close for damage!

Thank you all for the great tips and advice so far!! Keep it coming if you have more!

Yeah that reminds me of an incident this week. I walked into wife's office for a couple of things, (take her picture so I can remember what she looks like), and told her I bought another boat. As she leans flat across her desk, the look on her face was absolutely priceless as she exclaimed, "Are you INSANE"?!!!

And well, we all know the answer to that one now, don't we..

(No, it was not a smile. And yes it was true. But it was a small boat).
