There was a 4-5” spacer block with a cavity that made the compass higher

Ok, so I made a ¾” spacer to try it.
it works, the shifter has enough room to move both ways.
i will nee to use the router to make it the exact shape I want, at the moment I also made a new top cover (a few flaws on the first attempt, I want to get rid of)
I epoxy glued both pieces together, if I have time, tomorrow I will remove the binnacle grab bar and route the shapes in place and be able to seal the entire piece in epoxy.

my next question is, how do I varnish on top of epoxy???
I tried with the first top I made, but the Cetol does not hold to it.

If it was me, I'd ditch the wood completely. Have one 3D printed. Personally, I'd make it out of fiberglass, but that's only because that plays to my strengths.

If you stay with wood, and it is only 3/4" needed, then I'd probably paint it to match the binnacle.

Fibreglass would be nice, I have no issue with it, except the gel coat part
So it will be wood for now, it will be solid and look good (at least I think so )
I am not one who wants to spend all his time on bright work, but a splash of wood is nice
I will post pictures when things progress

This is the first try, without a spacer

sorry for the messy cockpit, but this is a work shop at the moment
I promise it usually is clean.

That looks great. Now you have the problem that once you put a finish on it, it is going to embarrass the cup holder near it and force you to refinish that. Which is going to embarrass the companionway door sliders and force you to refinish those. And the chain reaction goes until you run out of wood!

Good thing you are getting started early in the season!

Ok, went to trim the extra wood with my router h to is morning, what a disaster.
First the bit wasn’t long enough to do both pieces together (I epoxied them yesterday together), so I figure no problem, I will do one side, flip it and do the rest….. yah didn’t work that way, I had a bit too big of a pass and had a massive tear out in the wood, but chunk went flying
Ok, back to the cutting of new pieces to start again, the is time I routed the pieces before epoxying them together, small tear out, but it will be at the rear of the binnacle, so I will fill with thickened epoxy tomorrow, instead of cutting out the whole inside for the shifter clearance, I just used a hole saw and it is perfect
Now I epoxied both parts together, tomorrow I will go and start filling the tear out and hopefully by the weekend this whole project will be canned

also epoxied the extended bracket near the shifter to strengthen it.
All that before lunch and getting ready for work

Perfect spot for one of those suction cup drink holders.
