well, aeolus was launched yesterday and rigged today. i was twenty minutes away from launching in early june and .............................

rudder off, shaft off, quadrant , cutlass bearing out, packing for rudder and shaft, full tank service, seals for everything, cooling system cleaned, all berrings replaced.

everything came apart and went back together nicely. all these parts were fully serviced. no seized anything,
some small glass work was done near the rudder as well. molich used the best gear for everything.

that service is over and the next 70 days are the best of the year

all good as new now.

US1 design, john alden, 1948 built, dad bought in 63'

notice the lovely way the deck rises as it flows to the transom, dad took great care so it would not hog over the winters

fast day racer

7' beam on a 38' boat, inboard shrouds to boot, went up wind like you can't believe.
no life lines
no engine
no electronics
no head room
mohogany planks on oak frames
6' draft
running back stays
canvas decks

sailing attire back then, always sailed with a crew
tiller steering on 38'

no self bailing cockpit, wet boat, lots of pumping with a huge hand crank pump.

the bow did not go over the short lake erie waves, it drove through them

there were no reef points on those sails, you learned to hang on.
before this boat dad had a star, before that a lightning. all woodies
i loved sailing with my father, he was a great teacher, by the time i was 14 i was allowed to take her out with my friends on many summer days, we did sail that vessel hard and loved it. we would ride our bikes the 25 miles to the club with lunch in bags and sail all afternoon, clean up the boat, and peddle back home.
every day
my buds and i had a fast 38' racer to play on all summer long.
we all crewed for dad whenever he was going out. he was a nice guy.

it was a different time.

back then in minnesota the driving age was 14

we were sailors and loved it

when i was 20, dad bought aeolus out east, he had me and my crew (my buds) bring it home to western lake erie

do you share your toys with your kids? when they were young?

i did , just like dad

oh yeah, we helped with all the annual wood boat maintenance, all of it.

we were taught that too
