Sailboat Accident

I got some clear silicone tape from the hardware store but haven't tried it yet. Anyone use something like this?

The PO of my boat used it quite a bit. I've learned that it has some great benefits. It doesnt dry or crack even after 10+ years in the sun. He covered some mast wiring (cabin to mast). It protected it from mechanical abrasion and whatnot but the clear tape let UV through. I looked it up and they make tape in multiple colors along with UV inhibitors.

There's also self amalgamating electrical tape. Interesting stuff. You can form it into lots of different shapes if I remember correctly.

From what I understand sailtape is usually white and helps block UV. Both tapes seem to run $10-20 per roll

I tend to disagree and would seek legal advice after trying once again. I had something similar happen many years ago. A swage cracked on my O'Day and the mast bent. The insurer, whom I cannot recall, initially denied the entire claim stating the damage was due to mechanical failure. I pushed back and maintained that the stay was the mechanical failure and the damage to the mast was consequential and covered. They covered the mast.
I was thinking the same thing and agree. If it was the stay that failed, why wouldn't the damage to the mast be consequential? There doesn't seem to be any difference between the damage to the deck due to the impact of the mast and the damage to the mast due to the impact of the deck!

If any part ——-such as the main pins holding the forestay —- had metallurgical defects such as inclusions which weakened the part, you may be able to claim a defective pin caused the forestay failure. Unfortunately a metallurgical analysis of the pin might be costly, and you might not have been able to find it the suspect parts after the rigging came down. Call a local engineering school w a mettalurgy department, some one might be able to help at a lot les cost than a lawyer.
