I own a 1980 C30 and I need to replace the rudder bushing. What is the best procedure?

Rudder

Hi Aaron, http://www.tcsn.net/bosun/c30/emergencytiller.htm will give you a good look at what you're dealing with. I replaced the lower nylon bearing washer on my 81 C30 the last time I was on the hard doing the annual bottom paint etc. If you're doing it alone like I did, put a series of blocks under the rudder that you can remove one at a time to lower the rudder once the bolt through the top post has been removed. I don't remember the rudder being that heavy, just a little awkward for one person. I used a jack to hold it in place on the install. The whole job went pretty easy. Good luck. Ron s/v Seascape

Some Additional Thoughts

Aaron, Ron's right on, but I'd like to add a few glitches that might complicate things. The following assumes that you want to fix the lower bushing as well as the upper: First, if you're hauled & on blocks, you're probably going to have to dig a 1' hole below the rudder to get it out. When you drop the rudder it's going to hit the ground before the shaft is free of the lower bearing. Not a big deal, but if you're boat is resting on pavement or if the ground is frozen, then this is definitely going to halt your progress. The second potential problem is the steering quadrant. If you have wheel steering & you're sure the quadrant hasn't been disconnected within the last few years, it can be a REAL PAIN getting those bolts free. On many C-30's rain water leaks through the rudder cap & collects on the quadrant set screws. Water + Aluminum quadrant + stainless screws = potential problems. I had to sacrifice my quadrant (cut it with a hack saw) to get it free so I could drop my rudder. A new one wasn't cheap, and hacking that thing off in tight quarters added 1 whole day to my project. It's all do-able, but I thought you'd want to know that there are some potential road blocks that can set you back. Good luck with the fix! Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632

I just worked on this

I just was just working in this area. I was fighting fresh water coming in at the emergency tiller. How much play is to be expected and is the the nylon bearing washer to take care of this? I see the Tech pictures like http://www.tcsn.net/bosun/c30/emergencytiller.htm where are these found? I can not back into the originating site, I would like more of this type for my boat as it is obviously very helpfull. Thanks and good luck Jim Nixon jimnixon88@yahoo.com

Another Playful Rudder

I have play in the rudder of my '78 Catalina 30 as well. Mine is an up-and-down motion noticable only under power. I have rack and pinion wheel steering and all is quiet under sail.Under power, I get an intermittant clunking. Any suggestions. Please let me know if you get any responses. Thanks.
