Roller furling question

I'm ready to add a roller furling to my Cat 25. I'd like to come out with a reliable system that is simple and hopefully not too costly. I'm also thinking of going with a new lighter weight jib, up to about 170%. I'm trying to avoid mistakes that some others have made. Am I dreaming?

Hey Tex...

You are going to find a lot of differing opinions on this topic, but after exhaustive research, I found that sailors generally tend to like the system that they have installed on their vessels. That said, I went with a less expensive unit called a CDI FlexiFurler from Cruising Designs Incorporated. The one option I went for was an upgraded Torlon bearing, which eases furling/reefing considerably. So far, I absolutely love it and don't know how I sailed without it. Remember those days this summer during the heat wave? Flaking and bagging that jib as the sweat rolled down your forehead? No more, friend. It now rolls away in less than 5 seconds. Wouldn't beleive it if I didn't see it myself. I got a great package deal from nationalsail.com - roller furler and new 150 Genoa for about 1500 bucks. Good price from what I found. Riggingonly.com sells the furling unit only at a very good price as well. Best of Luck, Rob

Roller Furling

One thing you might consider while contemplating the 170% headsail. Do you plan on rreefing? My understanding is: the larger the sail, the poorer the shape when furled. Even with a foam luff, if you have to crank it down to a storm blade it may be quite baggy and be useless for anything more windward than a reach.

These guys have a very economical system with a lot of good reviews.

Sea furl

hey man, on my 25 o'day i installed a sea flex kit. cost about $500.00 today... very simple to install, just cut the foil to fit the headstay, run 'er up and bolt on the drum. I added a halyard fairlead to prevent wrap and away we went. Very Simple. Works great... Wish the furler on my 30 did as well.. Hopes it helps...
