Back At You

Hey Tee-keel-la (Ray), It was a blast hanging out with you guys this weekend (I was the first boat in from shore on A Dock .) I would say a good time was had by all (even the sea scouts who found out how shallow the entrance is outside the channel).

Wish I had had my thinking cap on I would have introduced myself as we were on A dock all weekend. Really enjoy how the marina and DISC treat us when we come up there to race.

Do that on the AICW and youre gonna get either a 'dunkin' or a 'rollin'.

The most 'courteous' practice when youre being overtaken from astern is to answer/call on Ch16 and agree on which side will be the pass, tell them what youre going to do and then move to the side as far as reasonable or possible, then SLOW DOWN to about minimum wake. And the overtaking boat (if not a sport fishing boat from NJ or S. FL) should slow down AT your stern, then keep just enough speed on to expedite the pass and then resume when full ahead. The pass is faster, gets the 'pass' over with quickly and no one gets rocked 'n rolled.
The KEY here is communication ... Ch16 (low power) with recreationals, and Ch13 with commercials ... and a few drinks, etc. when/if you meet up with them further along 'the ditch', etc.

NJ, etc. sport fishing boats traditionally wont ever answer, go bow up at your stern for max. effect, give you the finger because you're in their way, or look completely to the other side of their boat to totally avoid any eye contact, .... just as you get the maximum possible wake from the direction of the stern quarter, etc.
The AICW/regionally infamous boats from S. Fl who do this with 'gusto' are "FU2" and "UpUrs", both berthed in Lauderdale.

Newbie radio question. Overtaking situation. How do you identify yourself to the other boat? Sailboats are mon hull or cats, bigger than mine or smaller (mostly bigger). Power boats are just that. If I'm close enough to read the name I think I am too close.

Gail Rs comments are right on in my case. Because I am still learning my boat and how to sail, 4 boat lengths seems awful close to me.

Luckily I have been able to choose sailing days during off peak days so there is plenty of open water to sail in.
