2007 is all but over and what's left on your wadded and well-worn list of projects? Some bottom paint that's still in the can? Perhaps an SSB antenna overcame your confidence? And what the heck, those trailer wheel bearings are hardly smoking at all. Well, good news: Wednesday we all get to start over again! What are your sailing resolutions for 2008? Expanding your cruising area or skills? A race or two? Maybe a big, juicy DIY project? Do your resolving here, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz on the home page.

...but no replies. Does that mean no one is going to stick their neck out? OK, I'll go first. I'm in the middle of rewiring my 26S. When I bought it the battery was dead... check with another battery showed it didn't matter- nothing electrical worked, anyway! Pulled the switch panel and found a mess- every wire had at least one splice between panel and wherever it disappeared to; many different kinds of wire, some unsuitable for the application; no labels or numbers, all snarled so badly it looked likel a poorly made bird's nest. The battery connections had been much the same- splices, different kinds of wire. My plans are to replace all wiring, replace interior lighting (and add a couple) with LED lights, replace whatever running lights I can't get to work, add an anchor light, move the switch panel to the console over the galley so I don't have to be a contortionist to see what I'm turning on or off, install the am/fm/cd I got Christmas, and put in a new battery and charger. Hope the VHF radio and depth sounder and be resurrected. Naturally, I want all this finished by spring, the sooner, the better. I also need to deal with a shrunken bolt rope this winter- makes for an ugly sail. Should I get this all done, I'm sure to find something else to prevent boredom. If this qualifies as a New Year's resolution, so be it. It's early, but ... Happy New Year to all.

I'll get in on this too

First off when I was bringing the 37 home last year, the exhaust hose developed a crack, right behind the engine. Which of course sprayed salt water everywhere. Now I regularly am getting intermittent non working things. So I am going to re wire the entire engine compartment, and switch/breaker panel. A new battery charger, as the old one apparently puts out too much voltage in float and boils water out. Interior gets new headliner, floor, cushions and lighting. And oh yeah, the boat gets sailed a lot more this year than last.

Ditto the last sentence, Nice N Easy...

Bought my boat at the end of August, right after my daughter decided on a December wedding. Had no idea wedding planning could occupy so much time. Not necessarily my time, but my wifes's. My daughter and her future hubby are both teachers and coaches, so not much got done during the week-everything went on on weekends. Most of that did not require me, thank goodness, but it meant I had no crew! I spent a few weekends doing some minor repairs and maintenance that the PO had let slide, then managed to get her out one Saturday in October, on the Pamlico River- had a ball. After that, it was wedding prep every weekend, or the weather was too bad, until the wedding on Dec. 8- then Christmas shopping took over. I'm very much looking forward to lots of trips starting this spring. It's nice that my daughter recruited me some more crew!

Where to start?

Re bed the stanchions and through bolt them. Re bed the boom crutch and through bolt it. Find, remove and scarf in the supposed rotten rib in the counter stern. Remove all bottom paint, new barrier coat and bottom paint. Strip, bleach, stain and re varnish the spars. Remove and re bed the ports in the cabin trunk. Resuscitate the knot meter. Oil, coolant change. Change the packing gland. Strip, bleach, stain and re varnish the cabin trunk exterior. Get Oh Joy's PHRF certificate. Install a heater. Go sailing a lot. That's just the boat stuff and doesn't include race car stuff. Oh, ride my bike a couple of times this year.

Docking Skills

While this may sound a little strange for a sailboat forum, my resolution is to practice and improve my docking skills. After years of sailing in a variety of conditions, I continue to be most stressed when docking. Areas of concern, Prop walk... How to make it work for me Reverse... Not one of my strengths Winds in close quarters... I hate these conditions There you are.. May my dock neighbors be warned. Garner www.sailingseadragon.com

solar and spanish

still haven't designed the solar charging system on the new boat, but I'm resolved to have it up and running by our Delta cruise this summer. also continuing last year's resolution to learn Spanish in order to augment cruising the Sea of Cortez. Sixteen students registered for my sea kayak circumnavigation of Isla Espiritu Santo over Spring break, so it's time to shift that resolution into higher gear. Spanish II, here I come!

This year I will

1. Set off on May 1st and return some time in October. I will not let myself get sidetracked with other projects. 2. Prioritize my to do list and get the important ones done so as not to delay departure. 3. Sail more and spend less time in marinas.

I must finish hitching over my lifelines.

And I must find more time for the boat come spring. Good news is that Nancy agrees. ;D Maybe we will repaint the topsides again this year scrubbing isn't enough to get rid of the shabby look.
