removing bottom growth

Nope, you're right, he doesn't live in San Diego.... he lives in FLORIDA... the anti minimum wage, no income tax, warm water, non union, dirt cheap living state where all nurses and teachers are underpaid.
Hull cleaning rates vary widely in Florida, much more so than in California. But you should know that the rates you pay in San Diego are lower than anywhere else in the country.

I am thinking that I will head down there and check the boat out. If the boat itself looks good then I will jump overboard with a scraper and see how tough scraping the bottom while in the water will be. If its easy, I move forward (scape and scrub the bottom while in the water, then trailer it home). If I cant make a dent with a scraper then I will just pass on the deal.

I can help hold your head underwater while you scrape ...
boy, I tell you what... it sure is nice to have friends as generous as you!!!

first your try to make me choose between my beer and staying on the boat while TRYING to wash the top of the mast, then after I did both you are going to drown me!!!

Don't be surprised if the growth has destroyed e gel coat. With no bottom. Paint to deter them the barnacles have had a field daynin that bottom. Unless you are prepared to gring and replace the gel coat with an epoxy bottom, which like every thing else you are looking at....I would just walk away.

Having a boat is great, having a cheap boat even greater. Having a catastrophe you have to spend weeks or months preparing to go back in the water....just not worth it.

Good luck.

Now you're on the right track.. take a mask and snorkel... check it out yourself.

Yeah, here's my biggest concern on this boat - Barnacles. Wet barnacles fresh out of the water, are easy enough to scrape. However, the base that is adhered to the bottom will be left behind.

The question is, how does one remove just the thin round base? Remember that the glue these little buggers use is stronger than cyanocacrylate.

I remember in my youth, researchers were trying to figure out how to synthesize barnacle glue, because it's just that strong. I wonder where that ever went? Time to break out the google!

Hey, wow, check out this BBC article from 2009: http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8309000/8309466.stm

doesn't lime-a-way, on-off or worst case scenario, muriatic acid, work to remove the bases??

With a bunch of those rings left after scraping, I found out On&Off works well.

hmmm I am starting to wonder if it is worth it...I will have to decide whether it will be easier to deal with the bottom on that boat or the entire deck replacement of my current boat. The centerboard is definetly stuck. fortunately it is stuck up, so I will be able to get it on the trailer.
Is there a self car wash close by - you could try that as an option to a power washer. While not as strong it is better than nothing.

im gonna agree with most everyone here that this hull is going to be a disaster, without bottom paint i wouldnt even look at it, even a cheap bottom paint if left unmolested will almost always protect the boat from the barnacles for 10-12 years or more, it wont be perfect but definitely a far......FAR cry better than bare gel-coat.

Good luck with the cleaning. Glad you found someone who will do the work for you. But I think, as mentioned before, there will be a higher charge for a first time cleaning on a really fouled boat. Might be too late now, but I would recommend that you make a PVC scrubber and try and knock off as much of the not-so-adhered marine life that resides on the bottom of the boat before letting a diver go at it. At least the finale cost might be lower.

Regardless, hope this works out for you.

some good advice here but I am afraid that we have gone off topic a bit which has lead to some confusion.

I am not hiring a pro diver to clean the bottom. The boat is not worth the $$ for that. I am going to try to scrape it as clean as I can before I put it on the trailer (with the help of a buddy who has diving gear). After scraping, if practical, I am going to try scotch brite pads.

I have considered locating a carwash as well.

what I am having to consider during all of this is that my current boat needs an ENTIRE electrical system and it also needs the ENTIRE deck to be replaced. If cleaning the bottom is less work than that, then I will probably go ahead with this boat. If we jump in the water and cant make a dent then I will reconsider.

Or perhaps nothing at all...since the reference was to Florida, not California.
The bottom line is you have no idea what the OP could expect to pay, since; 1.- you don't know where in Florida the boat is located, and as I said before, hull cleaning rates there vary widely (in the course of this thread I've seen Florida rates of well over $3.00/foot) and 2.- you based your opinion on what you pay in San Diego, where prices are very low.
