Raw water strainer

Where is the raw water strainer on an O'Day 302? I see the hose comes out from the thru hull into the fiberglass pan. Then it exits at front of the engine to the water pump. I don't see a strainer.

@sailcraftri If you can see into the bowl and there is no strainer, then there is something missing in the bowl. Pictures of such an anomaly are always good to post.

Good chance there’s not one. Oday 28’s built just before the 302’s didn’t have one. Seaweed or any other debris would occasionally collect in the heat exchanger.

I have a oday 302 and it does not have a raw water strainer. A Scoop install installed in reverse was all it has. I am in the process of installing a Groco strainer. It is a tight fit. I did check the heat exchanger and it was clear so seems like the scoop is working. The boat is on Lake Michigan so not too much of a concern.

My 1988 O’Day 322 has a Groco strainer between the thru-hull and the water pump. Located near the stern tube.

Your boat likely does not have one. My O'Day 322 went 30 years without one, apparently.
I liked the Vetus strainer some of the new boats I deliver have installed, so I installed one for my own boat a year or two ago. Very easy to check and clean out. See pictures.

AndreNJ11, thank you for those very clear pictures. You are an inspiration to keep the engine clean in my 302.

The Groco on the right is for the head, and the one on the lower left is for the engine strainer…
