Ranger 12'

I took all the hardware and gunwales off my Ranger 12 to clean it up and repaint it. It was green and there were many runs so I sanded it down and decided to switch to the original blue and red.

Now that I've got 1-2 coats on the hull, I'm seeing many places with concerning cracks. They aren't just superficial because I can feel them and they are still very visible after 1 coat (2 in some places). I'm not sure if they were always there or if I caused them when I flipped the boat over without the support of gunwales and benches. I think they actually were there but just weren't visible against the old dark green. I also have noticed a couple of these inside along the benches.

I was sailing this boat last summer just fine so I'm wondering how (or if) to proceed.

Options:
  • Ignore them, they are fine! (I was sailing this boat last summer)
  • Suck it up, grind, re-glass, re-fair, re-paint. If I ignore them I'll be sorry.
  • This is a job for an expert, call around and find a pro to fix it
  • The hull is toast, time to get a new boat!
Thoughts? Thanks for any help!

Anyone have suggestions for where I might find replacements for this fastener?

It came off my Ranger 12 and, along with about 30 more, is used to secure the gunwales. I believe it is brass, 1.5" long, 1/4" OD. It doesn't have to be an exact match as I'd be very happy to replace it with something that roughly looks and works the same. I'm missing two of these.

If not, any suggestions on alternatives?

Thanks!

I have not seen a part like that. I can understand how it was built and used in your boat.

Places I would give a contact to would-be.

Duckworks Boat Builders Supply in Port Townsend. Operations manager is Scott Jones. About Duckworks Boat Builders Supply

They are pretty well connected with the Northwest Maritime Center. Home | Northwest Maritime The Center is a workshop and a museum of old wooden boats. They may be able to give you a possible source.

Longship Marine is a consignment store in Poulsbo, WA, that receives many old fittings.

Good Luck

I am guessing that you could find a piece of tubing, cut it to the correct length, then you could thread it and buy screws to match.

So after a number of times on the water, I’ve made some adjustments and added some features to the boat which I’ll post in the thread.

First side project: I made a floating boat hook. I picked up an old bronze hook made in Norway and fashioned the handle from 2x2” white pine. Wanted to use Doug Fir but all I saw was pine that day. I used the spar gauge to divided the square into eight and eyeball the rest with the plane to make a 7 1/2’ round. The hook end was left thick and it tapers to the handle. I made an additional taper about 2-3’ from the handle end. I chiseled the point to fit the hook. Varnished it. Leathered and put a French Hitch on the handle. All pretty straight forward.

Took it out for a couple sails and and it worked great to grasp the tow hook on the bow and the docks. I didn’t drop it in the water, so had no idea if it would really float.

It scuffed up the cockpit a little, so I decided to make a cover for it. Had some extra leather... why not, right?

I went out yesterday and did a float test. Wow! It actually floated and at the right level below the wrapped handle.
Hi @PNW Sailor, does the cap on your transom wrap around the top of the transom at all or is it just attached on top? Is it the exact size of the transom or does it overhang a bit? Also is it just screwed on or also epoxied? Or bedded with something gooey?

I'm replacing mine (missing from my boat when I got it) and trying to figure out the best approach.

Thanks!

They are coupling nuts. McMaster has them in SS not bronze. The stainless one should work for you.

I don't see anything in 1/4" OD unfortunately. Did you see that on another page?

How accurate is your measurement? A ¼" OD is .25 inches, the coupling for a 10-32 bolt is 19/64" which is .297 or about 5/100 of an inch larger. With that small of a difference it should work, although the thread is probably different from what you have.
