Alright folks I need your opinion on the best way to handle a situation.

There is boat in the slip next to me, it is a ~20ft cuddy cabin fishing boat with a 150 horse outboard on the back of it. You would think that a boat of this size and power would be pretty easy to dock, appearantly not!

Well this couple regularly (1 to 2 times per week) head out for a sunset booze cruise and when they return they are typically intoxicated to the point that walking seems to be a very difficult task. When they dock, they use my boat and the boat on the other side of them as bumpers while tieing up in their slip. Afterwards, they do not offer any appology or even acknowledging their actions in any way. I have offered before to give them a hand docking but they were pretty insistant that they did not need any help. No damage to my boat or their other neighbor as of yet, but I would like to handle this matter before there is any damage.

My question to you all is what would be your opinion on the best way to handle this?

1. Confront them while they are sober (prior to their boating excursion) and ask that they use a little more common sense and try to remain sober while out boating for their own safety as well as the safety of other people and their property.

2. Attempt to confront them when they return from their trips while they are playing boat slip pinball and risk a drunken bar room brawl type situation there on the dock.

3. Bypass the pickled pair and go directly to the marina owner and explain the situation to him and ask that he take some kind of corrective action.

4. Inform the local marine police of this regular dangerous/illegal activity, or even the municipal police of it since once they complete their docking exercises, they stumble to their car and head out onto the streets.

Any helpful advice you have on this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Print your question to us and hand a copy to them and the marina management. Ask them what you should do.

It's a shame they are not sailors

At least then you would have some proven remedies. Perhaps one of these techniques would work for stink-potters.

My vote is for #3 and #4. Get em out of the marina and/or off the water.

For reasons far more important than simply scratching up another boat, they present a safety hazard both to themselves and, more important, to others. Presumably after getting drunk on the boat and returning to the dock, they get in their car and drive off in that condition.
I'd give them one warning and if it recurs, call the police and CG.

My vote

Report this to the USCG. Then call them to the scene when you see them round the jetty. The USCG waiting at the dock for them will fix this issue fairly fast.

Report this to the marina manager or owners. If they do nothing aske to be re-located, away from this clown.

You can also present them with a bill for compounding and polishing your hull due to the damage they caused. Set your video camera inconspicuously on the dock & when they approach hit record. You can then show them the tape of them smashing your boat when you hand them the bill. If they don't pay small claims court is an option. Regardless of the current lack of damage you may visually see it may lead to stress crazing at a later date which is very expensive to blend and fix. Their behavior is totally unacceptable.

When all else fails a little water in their gas tanks will make life on the water a little safer for a little while..;) Who know the engine may run long enough for the USCG to pick them up drunk..:D

They obviously have been doing this for years and think it is OK.
That said...anything you say or do risks a confrontation.
Reporting them to the marina folks will probably have the marina folks telling them who reported them which goes back to the confrontation. (You can't argue with a drunk...or anyone about to get that way.
I would report them to the Coast Guard who will know how to handle it!

It would be better if a marina person was at the dock when these people come back in. That puts the burden on the marina if this continues, and, with the marina eye-witness, takes you out of having to be a stoolie. I think an "inquiry" to the Coast Guard/DNR/police in advance of the next happening may get one of them to be there to take action. Maybe the cop would sit in the parking lot until the boaters pull away in their car. DWI in addition to BWI.

I agree with Maine Sail and everyone else who advocates going through door number 4. You could be saving a life, maybe more than one; maybe their own.

The stink boat operators do this on a regular basis. For them this is "normal" behavior. They think they are doing nothing wrong. Talking to them will not change their thoughts on their behavior-its what we always do. Talking to marina people might get you fingered as a troublemaker. What I would do is type out a letter stating: The authorities have been advised about your habit of operating a vessel and automobile while intoxicated. Fines, court cost, loss of licenses are real. Ye be warned!. Laminate it. or place in ziplock and attach it to their steering wheel. Then they might think twice about getting drunk on the boat. They won't know who put the notice there.

I have to disagree with any personal confrontations either face to face or in writing, especially in writing. I would notify the local authorities, both Coast Guard and the local water police. Offer to give them the approximate time these folks return and call them in advance if you can. Also notify the local police since these folks have to drive home. I would do it before they kill someone and I will be the one to regret not doing something. Chuck

I'm sorry but I have to disagree on this statement. Stating that this is normal behavior for all power boaters isn't right & it isn't true.
After all what's wrong w/ tossing down a couple (six packs) while out for a boat ride. :)

All kidding aside, if you have a local harbor master or state enviromentel police that's who I would talk to instead of the CG. These guys are the water cops & deal w/ this stuff all the time. Up here in NH, boating while intoxicated means you get busted for DWI & you lose your drivers license.

It is a lousy thing to do to someone but if they're that torn up......

sailormanbigd, that's a rather broad brush. Perhaps a roller would offer better coverage in shorter time? Or a spray unit?

I agree with the others that say report it and let the pros do their thing. confrontation usually results in altercation and/or retribution with toasties.

BTW all sailors in New Port Richey are crazy old coots w/ bladder control issues.:poke:

You guys crack me up! Get your dock neighbors together, the ones who are getting their boat used as a fender, and any other interested party, and tell the drunk a$$hole that you as a group are not going to tolerate this a$$holeness and he's been invited to a blanket party the next time he comes back in 3-sheets-to-the-wind. If he makes noises about the law, call his bluff, he doesn't want the law involved either; DUI, lawyers, etc. I can practically guarantee he will put in for a slip transfer right away. Sometimes proactive is the way to go.

I would go with drunken brawl - that's always good for a laugh!

Seriously though - avoid any direct or indirect confrontation.

Anonymously report them to your local water/municipal police as others have suggested.

I once had a dock neighbor who owned a Catalina sailboat and who would routinely return to the dock drunk as a skunk, often missing the slip and frequently hitting something in the process. Stupidity isn't limited to power boaters. Making silly generalities such as "all Catalina owners are drunk" is equally silly.

Please stop mistaking my lack of boating skills with drunkeness.
