Hello,
I bought this winter a Pearson 36-2 from 1985 (hull 33) and have been fixing her so far.
I am very pleased with the boat in many aspect but i have 2 major questions:

1) When going upwind with wind and waves there is a lot of squeaking, i mean noise between the toilet and aft cabin bulkhead and the fiberglass moulding that hold it at the upper part, below the roof. I have tried to inject oil, grease, lube... still this very annoying noise.
What to do???
I also noticed that the stainless steel pipe that goes from the left side of the sink to the roof also move up and down (at least 1/4") when the boat is sailing upwind in good weather
The pipe is not screwed onto the countertop. (should i screw it?)
I know when boats are built that way with one moulding for the outside hull and another for the inside, (please forgive my bad english, i am french) there is often this problem of squeaking It is very annoying to me, i can't imagine an offshore cruising with this noise...
Any help folks?

2) question: i have read in many forums that the Pearson 36-2 is a high end coastal cruiser but not a blue water cruiser...

WHY???

Is it because the boat is not strong enough OR is it because: the water tanks are too small, the equipment is not sufficient (no windlass) etc...
From my expertise, i found the rudder, the steering system and the rigging quite strong, the keel too, on the other hand, as i mentioned earlier, the boat structure "move" (and squeak!!!) when beating up wind... (but does that means "not strong"???)
So if properly equipped, why would you not go across the south pacific with a pearson 36-2???
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience
Bruno

Hello..... I have a 1986 p36-2. There was a few changes and one of them must have been the pipe in the bathroom as the 86 does not have this. I have no squeaks in the rear of the boat, however I do have squeaking at the front bulk head. Not sure how they tabbed the bullheads...... But think my issue was with a deck leak at the baby stay attachment. Recording this area is a fall project. I love the boat and feel it is a great comfortable cruiser for me and the wife.... Guess the tankage and probably the rudder attachment are issues for blue water claims by the manufacturer. Where are you located.

Thanks for your reply. The boat is actually located in St Maarten (West Indies) The pipe i was referring too is located on the kitchen's countertop (see picture)

Oh yes..... I miss understood. That pipe serves as a deck support as well as a conduit for the cable for the centerboard on models that have that. And yes it should to screwed down, but those screws will not provide enough strength. I am wondering.... forward of your mast above the table, is the deck stiffener attached? It attaches to the deck partner and mast to hold things in place. I will take a picture of what I'm talking about and post later.

yes, i think i know what you are talking about. Is it the rod that is just on the fwd side of the mast? see picture below. If so then yes it is attached. actually i have no squeaking there, only on the aft cabin/toilet bulkhead

Yes that's the part. My thought was that if that is off.... or even loose you may get some upward pulling on the cabin top. Above the kitchen is the main sheet traveler.... could this be pulling the deck up? I'm sure yours is like mine and attached to the sea hood. When under sail I use to watch the sea hood flex due to the pulling from the main sail.... I had the sea hood modified and reinforced so this is not an issue any more. Very curious to find out the issue and hope a few other owners chime in on this.

btw.... the pipe on the counter on my boat is bolted on...... so maybe that is an issue. I would start there and see what happens. Do you have a centerboard model? If not I would add a nice backing plate..... if you do have the centerboard with a cable running through the pipe just have as large as possible washers for each bolt.

I have the deep keep model, so no cable is running inside the pipe. I actually thought about putting some bolts through the counter top but was afraid it would lift the whole counter top...

Otherwise, YES, it is definitely the main sheet traveler that is pulling the hood all together with the roof. Could you explain me how you reinforced it or could you take a couple pictures? I think if i reinforce the sea hood + i bolt the pipe i should be fine...

FYI i had some squeaking near the front cabin bulkhead and found out that it was the rod of the baby stay rubbing against its plywood cover on the ceiling. That was an easy one, i just had to file the plywood a bit...

I think if you bolt the pole down you will be fine. Was just at my boat...... You have the entire load of the main sheet on the block that is attached to the cabin top which is right where the pole is. Bolt down with a solid backing plate and see what happens.
