Patrick, The flange was good enough till now, The issue is a rub rail.

The rub rail doesn't have to be vinyl. It can be wood. Again efficent and cheap. I would take a piece of say 2x2. Round the two outside edges. Put a saw kerf in it the width and depth of the hull/deck joint. Predrill every 8 to 10 " and then screw up or down or both through the 2x2 and the hull/deck joint. That will probably be stronger than the original joint. r.w.landau

I would think...

the flange also adds some NEEDED stiffness... and even more so with the bulkheads removed. I say glass it over on the inside if you must... then add some sort of an exterior rub-rail like R.W. suggests. Rich
