Again, I'm not sure of the exact requirements, it could well be that this only applies to commercial, passenger carrying vessels. I still cannot remember where I read it, online or in a magazine. I remember it as a fairly new requirement (or a new interpretation of an old requirement?). The obvious concern was the bowl melting in an engine fire and adding fuel to it. I noticed it and remembered it (though not too well!) because #1, I have a Racor with a plastic bowl in my engine compartment and #2, I am planning on setting up a redundant filter system as well. I remember thinking Oh great, now I'll have to buy 2 new filters instad of just 1. Paul, as I understand it, they would be OK for use outside of the engine compartment. Tom s/v Orion's Child

Fred, tcbro?

Since I don't take passengers for hire, I guess I'm "OK to go", as they say. But using the old CG rule, maybe it'd still smart to use them (full metal casings) on gas engines. But the exception may be diesel which most sailboats are (save for he older ones that have the old A-4's in them).

Fred's right on two counts

Yea, Gary, that's a really nice and sanitary looking installation. I'm jealous looking at all that room you have in the engine compartment! Also, it looks like you can easily change the filters by just reaching in through the opening which is convenient. For info, Fred is right on two counts - the one about the Coast Guard requirement and the second, I'm pretty sure, about the A4. Some people's chain is easy to jerk than others! ;)
