G’morning Greg and others. I have a video that hopefully helps ‘splain’ (as Ricky Ricardo from “I Love Lucy” used to say.) but when I try attaching it, I get an error message. . The cable that’s attached to the car does turn down in the aft end of the boom and goes inside. I haven’t figured out where it ‘goes’.
I don’t think you can upload videos directly to SBO. I save mine on YouTube, and then include a link to the YouTube video.

So we are speculating that this is/was some form of roller-furling boom…interesting. @FROCKY , are there any name plates or decal anywhere on the boom to indicate the mfg?

Are we also thinking it is inoperative and really just a boom? I would think so, if this vang is attached to the part that should roll….can we get a photo of where it attaches to the boom?

But we still don’t know how the outhaul is tightened.

The photos at both ends of the boom sure look like it was originally a rolling boom furling system. But looking carefully at those photos seems it has not been used as such for a long time. I would not be surprised that it no longer works. But we have no overall photos. Also no photos of the current main sail but that would only be useful to try and understand if the current main sail has been modified from a roller furling to something else - not the topic here....

I'm old, I've seen these things work...sort off. Nico fico an Ausie company IIRC. The fore & aft ends of the boom do not spin. The crank turns a pinion gear internally which spins the mid section of the boom. The grease is now hard as rock. The boom ends spin on a plastic or phenolic bushings. Likely ready for replacement. Good luck finding them.
The outhaul cable will turn on a sheave and bushing. If it's a metal sheave it might be usable. Clean, lube and shim the sheave with nylon washers, McLube the slide that connects to the sail cringle.
The wire will go forward to the gooseneck. It may be compounded, so there would be a deadend aft with a wire block attached to a line exiting at the gooseneck. Another block at the forward stationery exit, going down to a small cleat. Must have worked great at the boatshow with no wind or battens. 50 yrs later? Fico's & parts long gone. Mine was on a 38' S&S designed Northstar. I converted to slab reefing by drilling & tapping bolts in the aft boom fitting to keep the mid boom from turning.

My Ranger 29 c. 1972 had roller boom furling. It had long since been retired when the boat came to me. The two line slab reefing worked very well. Actually it was a reefing hook and one line.
I think roller furling booms were born of wanting to make sailing more accessible to the public. As PaulK said in his post it is a system bound to be trouble because sails are not pancake flat and battens, unless very carefully placed, don't roll into a boom evenly.
I'm not sure about the outhaul cart. I can't visualize the beast turning with the boom. If it ended up facing down it could cause an osteotomy of the cranium for some unfortunate crew member.

Another option, probably simpler and maybe less expensive, get rid of the car, and track if possible, and replace it with small blocks like this. The picture doesn't show it but the back fiddle block has a "V" cleat. This particular configuration gives a 3:1 purchase, but you can also increase the purchase with different blocks.
