Just coming back to this post for one last questions. I ordered a tilt pin and it will only go in on the last (farthest aft) hole in the merc.... but then it locks it in reverse and neutral and forward?

I also have this (PHOTO) (tilt lock reverse lever) on my outboard. Cant understand what this is and how its different than the tilt pin/lock

SORRY.. I meant the farthest "bottom" hole (not aft) is the only hole I could get the tilt pin into.

So not all the tilt pin holes are the same size after 50+ years. Not the end of the world.

Does the reverse lock lever work with the new tilt pin? If yes, gently drill out the tilt pin hole you want so the tilt pin will fit.

If the reverse lock lever won't work with the new tilt pin, then you are probably going to need a slightly smaller diameter tilt pin. Or something else is out of kilter.

just my take

I'm really not sure whats going on. I got the tilt pin in the bottom-most hole, which keeps the motor locked down in forward, neutral and reverse. But I know it supposed to only lock in reverse, but I cant seem to make that happen.

What does the tilt lock reverse lever do? Does it work together with the tilt pin? Cant seem to get a handle on how this all works...
