Over the last 15 years, one of my hobbies has been repairing badly neglected sailboats. Now I'm looking on the extreme end of the market and often picking these up for a few thousand dollars before I start in on them. One of the things I've learned (the hard way) is to start off by stripping off all of the bottom paint. You'd be surprised what can be hidden by a thick layer of ablative paint.
