Oh those "previous owners"

As a precautionary alert, and okay, a little bit of a rant, you never know what previous owners may have done. Here we have the tee fitting for the double sink drains on our Catalina 30. As you can see a PO, instead of taking the time and effort to properly install the hoses on a proper tee, made their own custom unit which did require the time and effort to grind off the barbs! Granted this is the drain and would normally not be pressurized but it is still connected to a thru hull, which btw, was only single clamped. :deadhorse:IMG_1081 (2).JPG

Don't feel bad I just replaced a white plastic PVC ball valve, that split along its entire length, because it had been threaded directly to a thru-hull fitting. The owner was very, very, very lucky I noticed this before he launched.

Chris,

That's why they don't spell the previous owner words out, they just refer to them as the, "PO."
You should have seen my boat man, it was labeled a, "Fixer Upper." It took almost a 2 year
nightmare to bring her up to snuff.

If we all had the money to buy a brand new boat w/warranty, the world would be a better place.

Just try to grin-n-bear-it man, after a point, it will be how you like it & not what was acceptable
to the (AARG), "PO." Some peoples' ceilings are sadly only other peoples' floors.

This is a great example for why you carefully screen and hire a capable, credentialed Marine Surveyor. Used boats are full of this kind of stuff, and much of it is buried away in some dark corner.

Oh we hired a very well known credentialed Marine Surveyor before purchasing this boat. This little shortcoming would not be found during a survey, no way to have known about it until the hoses were removed. What really boggles my mind is that someone went to the trouble of grinding off the barbs instead of installing correctly. That was more work then doing it the right way.

I think you will find that t-fitting configuration was not OEM, and a dead give-away of rogue DIY'ing. The sinks should be rigid plumbed together using proper threaded plumbing fittings and only then coupled to a discharge hose.

Nope, for a Catalina 30 of this vintage 3/4" clear vinyl hose is the correct factory install. http://www.catalina30.com/techlib/PartsManual/Systems.pdf

Or some of us refer to them as the "DPO" for Dreaded Previous Owner. I think that every portion that the DPO of our boat touched had to be repaired or replaced before she could be considered seaworthy.

Just take a look at what one of the PO's did to the base of my toilet. The bowl is porcelain and the base is plastic. They tried to tighten it up to stop a leak and ended up cracking the whole thing. I'm replacing the base assembly this week.

And what will your legacy be????:redface:
Mine will be a well documented boat with a 21st century electrical system, new water heater, new plumbing, new hoses and impeccable records.

How about YOU? :)

That was never a hose adapter just a pipe nipple with one of the threaded ends cut off. A very popular PO trick..

I made all repairs and modifications to my previous boat in a professional manner and if I wasn't sure I made damn well sure that I did my research and found out the proper way to do things. The folks that buy my old boat are getting one heck of a deal and don't have to worry about something done half a$$ed.:waycool:

My personal fav was a PO using galvanized bolts on a swing keel.

And silicone! Gobs and gobs of clear silicone everywhere. That way I know nothing will ever leak. :)

I too research and strive to do the best possible, and correct, work documenting everything I've done. Maine Sail's website is my go to before any project. As an example, most of my deck hardware has been removed and properly bedded using butyl tape (available for a very reasonable price from Maine Sail BTW).
