I'm wondering if what you are seeing are sand holes opening up. As cast iron is poured into the mold, poorly prepared sand molds often break up entrapping sand within the finished casting. Since these are areas that remain porous throughout the life of the casting there is little that can be done to correct them except your approach to repair as needed. The only other way you might find them is ultrasound or xray the whole thing. One of the ways we used to correct this condition in machine tools was to drill, ream and drive in a slightly oversized (.0002) cast iron dowel or plug.

How would you feel about encapsulating your keel? If you built up some layers of glass on the whole keel and the joint you wouldn't have to worry about rust, the joint won't leak and you'll add some strength to hold the keel on the boat? This would be at the expense of some loss of performance by a wider chord on the keel but I doubt it would matter much if your not racing. I saw one guy a few years ago that added glass just to the joint, no reason you couldn't add some layers to the whole keel.
I'm not sure how big of an issue this is. The previous owner let the boat get away from him maintenance wise. The keel looked bad but I don't think he did anything but add another coat of bottom paint each year. After blasting it, I'm confident that it is sound. I'll just keep an eye on it from year to year.

keeping it real

Joe, you will like this one. I just finished the aft head. I put Formica under the head.
Just sitting back and admiring it, I realized I did not run the water line. An hour later , the job is complete. What a dumb ass

Makes me feel better. Rebuilt the sliding galley this Spring and forgot to attach the water line to the tank, which took an hour redo. D'oh!

That's a good one Todd. I guess that's what makes these projects fun in hindsight. All the oh rats things that happen. Kinda like the bloopers from the movies. In the end though the movie comes out pretty good and hopefully these boats also. Went slip shopping today and was amazed at the prices being as low as they were. More boats on the hard than in the water. Saw 2 being busted up.

It gets better. I then go back to hook up the shower sump pump. Guess where the hose has to run? Right under the head.
I'm real good at taking this head a floor out now. Sump pump looks to be the original. Does not draw worth a darn. Goes like mad once it is fully primed but this pump should not need to be primed. It's on the replacement list sometime down the road.

Todd,
How is that shower sump set up? My shower just drains directly into the bilge, no room for anything else but I could possibly put a box inside the bilge just for shower water. If you could post a pic or two I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

Jibes,
both heads have showers. They both have trays that make up the entire floor. The forward head has a wood grate in the pan. A diaphragm pump is attached to a pickup in the pan. The switch for the pump is in each head. The pumps can run dry. Photos coming soon.
You will need a pump guard screen filter ahead of the pump.
Be sure to put a loop in the pump outlet hose so the water can no back flow a sink your boat.

FYI (I know it would be a bit of a drive for you all)

Todd & Susan Larson request your presence for a Renaming Ceremony
Place: 629 E. Lake Street
Time: 5:30pm
Date: Friday, Sept. 14

We’ve been working on Genesis for the past two years. (seen below being loaded near Philadelphia for her trip to Lake mills WI). We will soon be placing her in Sheboygan Harbor for sea trials prior to slowly making our way to the Bahamas. After extensive work, we have decided to rename her Panta Rhei. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heraclitus#Panta_rhei.2C_.22everything_flows.22

If not done with proper procedure and ceremony Renaming a ship can be bad luck .

Renaming ceremonies are steeped in tradition and superstition. They are an important part of the maritime community. Needless to say they are rare in the Midwest. We think you will find the ceremony as amusing as it is enlightening. The ceremony takes only a few minutes but all are encouraged to come early to have a look at the boat and get in the maritime mood with beverage, a bit of history and tales of these traditions.

We have timed this for 5:30 pm sharp so you can participate prior to other evening festivities. We will be heading to Carp’s Landing following the ceremony and invite you to join us.

The maritime tradition states that a renaming ceremony is a community event. Should you have plans with others, all are welcome to the ceremony.

The boat is located behind the old KD trailer factory which is now owned by Aggressive Metals. at 629 E Lake St. The entrance is directly across the street from Hamlin’s East Lake Street parking lot.

You will see a sailboat at the gate. Go through the gate and around the building. There you will find the Genesis.

Todd,
Thanks for the invite but I have been summoned to Federal District Court on Friday for three weeks of jury duty. How are you planning to get your boat to the equator for the ceremony? Unless you sail her backwards across the equator and make a sacrifice to Poseiden you will be looking at serious consequences. Also where do you propose to find a virgin to sacrifice?

I like your philosophy reference, "everything flows," very appropriate name for a boat. Best wishes for your party.

No need for the equator. In Wisconsin , We take the approach that everything can be solved if one drinks enough.
As for the virgin, In Wisconsin, We take the approach that all women are virgins if you drink enough.

I recommend you take the same approach to the jury duty, Have fun??

I'd love to come; however, the Mrs and I will be celebrating our tolerance for each other these past 27 years. Noticing a trend here? Sold Teazer married wife. Bought YOT stayed married. How does one change their moniker from 25 to 27yearslater?

So you've acquired your next project?

Good luck with the ceremony, we shall likely rename our O'day 26 in the spring.

Renaming ceremony

The past week was hell... too much to do too little time.
Rain prevented the last coat of paint on the non-skid so I did not re-install the bow rail and life lines.
Interior complete and decorated for the event. Winston Churchill showed up to perform the renaming ceremony chauffeured by our City council president (our towns version of a mayor)
Randy Otto (playing Winston Churchill) stole the show as usual. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...nIGQCw&usg=AFQjCNEkTV2fLEH_YotE29EgjgJeK3kgBA watch the whole video , he goes into character at the end.

Most had never been in a sailboat of this size before. They were amazed. Others had been in the boat when I had it torn apart. They could not believe it was the same boat.

We toasted many, including a toast to all of you. A great source of inspiration, a sounding board , and help with problems.

More later. Maybe a video of the event.

Final photos

Joe, (25 years later) got it right. Take an extra season if need be and not rush. This is killing me. The boat gets picked up tomorrow. Worked all day today in the rain getting things ready.

Here are some final photos. I plan to wrap things up next week and write-up a post of things I believe I did right and things I know I did wrong.

Click on the photos. Most are full size.

I painted the non-skid on the deck a (very slight) shade darker than the smooth gelcoat. The deck looks boring but it make the entire boat look many times better. (IMO)
It also reduces the deck temp a lot!!

Special trailer

The first photo shows both project boats. It shows very well that the hardest part is ahead. Assembling and stepping the mast, and setting up the running rigging. The two boats have very little in common.

The trailer came in and picked it out of the dirt. All that was needed was a trench dug for the keel bars to fit under the keel. VERY slick. No need for a crane. Cut the cost of moving the boat in half.

Please keep a eye on this thread. We step the mast and put it in the water Thursday. I have a lot of questions and need your help! I have not seen the mast up for two years. I hope I get the standing rigging right.
