Pie in the sky. Put all that money into a $40K boat and you end up with a $40K boat that cost $300K. Just look at the asking and selling prices today. An O'Day 37 cygnet is not and never will be a Swann.

Of course you wouldn't do it to try to make money as a business venture. It would make sense as an alternative to new if you wanted a good solid boat that was in new condition to use yourself instead of buying one. The brand new boat will probably lose half its' value in the first ten years anyway, so no one buying a new boat is expecting to get back what they paid for it. You buy a boat typically for the enjoyment of a toy, not for the investment potential.

My two cents

Thanks for posting this Peter. Gives us something to chew on.

Joe.... your right it's not a big project but let's wait a day or two and see what Isaac can bring you. If you take this on I hope you get that perfectionist out of your head. This is a fix and flip. Paint the hull. I'll even help you. Save and gelcoat work for touch-up for the cracks and dings.

I agree with the others a higher valued boat may be a better starting point.

VYTKS (O'day 39 need some help) I hope you are following this... A lot less money than what you are looking at. Hardware is pricey!! Composite materials not so much.

I took a learn to cruise class 20 some years ago on that model. Nice enough boat but the rear cabin puts it a bit out of the main stream.

Peter,
What was the condition prior to the accident?
What is the blister history?
How about the decks ? Soft spots??
Bad keel bolts???
ETC ETC nice to talk to the owner when he has nothing to gain.

Condition was very good. Never had a blister. No soft spots. Encapsulated keel, no bolts. Check out in an earlier post the inventory that the insurer required, YerazList01.txt. As for the rear cabin, they were popular back then and this was one of the better ones. Too many looked like elephants with howdahs. We bought her for the rear cabin.

Good point. I did notice that 37's were going for more than 39's a few years ago.

Well got a call in to Seawanhaka YC. Let's see where this goes. You are right Todd. This won't be a regelcoat job. Looks like a sand and buff deal to bring her back. Materials are pretty inexpensive. With Pittsford Wood Shop as my supplier all the woodworking materials are close by for high quality marine woods at low prices. The cushions, well I used Decorativefabricsdirect.com for yards and yards of fabric at crazy low prices. The foam you know the story there. U.S. Composites for the sticky, gooey and itchy stuff for stupid low prices. JD for Epoxy by the 5 gallon jug. I get free shipping for being a VIP member. Sailboatowners.com store for many other things. Just the short list of suppliers I used with excellent value and service. D&R for a rudder at 2795.00 which looks like the single biggest cost. Other than that some Volara foam for the hull liner with the same fabric I used for YOT to finish. Express Composites for the ding gelcoat and Duratec and viola new boat. Engine, I was bringing the tug Louisa back from St. Joe, Michigan and the engine room flooded during a storm on Lake Erie. Bent rods and other aggravations. End result, I rebuilt it, worked fine. Had more than a few go down during my tenure at the boatyard and managed to resurect those engines. Not easy but a ridge reamer and a hone can solve a lot of problems. If stuck, hot STP or even a Velocite #6 can free even the most abused industrial metal. It's more a matter of researching the options. But first things first. How much for the 'derelict' ha ha yeah right. It's a fantastic boat just waiting for a lunatic to bring her back. Best guess. Less than 20,000 for materials and my labor, well, what else I'm gonna do with my time.

I still think you should only do it if you want to keep the boat. After repairs it will only be worth about 30 grand in todays market. You'd likely only get back your material investment if you sell it. On the other hand the lead in the keel is probably worth a buck a pound or so.
Please check with my buddy Joe Merton at Merton's for composite materials, epoxy etc. he has great pricing and is a great guy to work with. We went to high school together. He carries all the chems plus the matt and cloth.

25yearslater,
Love the photo of your own personal boat yard.

Only 1 question though: Aren't you a bit far from the north shore of Long Island?

Still, I hope you can pull it off. Sure sounds like you can.

I'm still waiting for a call back from Snobsareus YC. The idea of getting it off the island is easy. Surprised Tow Boat didn't have collision mats on board. Lower them over the side and secure the lines is about all there is to it. In fact when the 130 foot Ganagua was sold here in Rochester it's bottom was so bad the entire boat had them over it's full length. It was then towed up the St. Lawrence to a shipyard in Maine for restoration. Next I'll start chasing the insurance company. Somebody has claim to this. Just a matter of who.

Joe, I work near the snooty yacht club and I've been curious as to the condition myself if you'd like I'll go check it out for you

If you are so inclined Bobby that would be great. I would love to restore another one. I don't even want to make money on it. I found after YOT I just enjoy the hell out of bringing them back.

Joe, you have my total blessing and awe. I am way past DIY projects. Selling all tools.

The yard manager at Seawanhaka is Robert Satori. Not a very chatty sort.

Scaramouche was in the yard last time we were there.

The hole is a circular crushed area about a foot in diameter. As noted, salvors tried to stem it with cushions. I don't think the engine got wet. She was on her side. As she righted the water leveled at the cabin sole level. I can think of any number of ways to patch that hole and get the boat to another location. For someone like you, it is certainly doable. But you still end up with a $30K boat. Parting her out might make more sense.

Call Boat US. They are much more chatty.

RAD knows this boat. We have both been on many rOnDAYvous. But not the most recent two.

Sorry we missed you at the rOnDAYvous this year. If you need labor in getting her floated out, let me know. I am always a glutton for punishment, and could probably get me and my buddy Mark up there in a week to look her over. It would be an honor to save another Good OlD boAt (Y). Sorry, I tried to get the letters aligned, but I lack Pete D.'s skill.

Thanks D. Bloomin' kid decided to hunt deer with my car. The Mrs. would have been quite upset if I had stolen her car for the rOnDAYvous. Still haven't tracked down who has the authority to dispose of this boat. A lot of calls are not being returned. As if the Yacht Club needs more money. It would be a shame indeed to see this one busted up for such a minor repair. Especially with someone (ME) who wants the chance to give it a new life and virtually give it to a new owner to enjoy. Thanks Peter. I will follow up on that lead. Glad you liked what you saw with YOT. Mast is heading out for reanodize and powdercoat in the next few weeks. Cheaper than a good paint job and more bulletproof.

I don't understand what is going on with the yacht club. I had one conversation with the manager. His direct phone number is 516 922 6305. Some pretty little girl will answer the phone and you will not get through. But then, this is not Scaramouche. Try this guy. Mitch Kramer. Runs the Tow Boat US operation there. He will talk straight and volubly. 516-702-9791. He WILL help.

I don't want to see our lovely boat broken up for a little hole.

"'tis not so deep as a well nor so wide as a church door, but 'tis enough, 'twill do."

"But she's a dead thing nor ever was alive."

Not so.

PS. Collision mats won't work. Geometry. The hole is alongside the keel. But while she is ashore you can rig all sorts of things that will keep wayer out during transit.

You might want to take a ride down there. Hard to duck you when you're there in person.
Anyone know if the boat was documented? If it was you need to show clear ownership through all these transactions to keep the documentation updated and clear title to the boat.

The boat is documented.

You can't get to Seawanakah Corinthian Yacht Club from here, any here. Go to the club's web site and get the driving instructions and be prepared to get lost -- often.
