O'Day 19 Weekender Chatfield
Hello,

I sailed a little in high school and college, and am excited to have my first boat, a 1982 O'Day 19 Weekender. It's been kept in great condition, with the exception of the companionway door, which seems to have warped and shrunk with time. At least while in the trailer the door now is too narrow and falls into the boat. I'm planning to rework it, but was hoping any other Weekender owner could share the dimensions of their doorway with me. Thanks!

RedIvy,
I would like to be the first to welcome you to the forum. You are in the best place to get everything you need for sailing from the best group of sailors around. It's good to have you join us.

I'm not personally familiar with the Weekender. I own an O'Day Mariner 19 and one thing I have learned, both from my experience with the Mariner and from other fiberglass production boats is that they are not all the same. One Mariner won't have exactly the same shape and size companionway as another. Chances are the Weekender will be the same.

You're best approach will be to take careful measurements of your companion way. The hatch boards, weather boards, drop boards, whatever you call them, are not difficult to make, but it is important to check the opening. Mine, for example, is not exactly symmetrical.

Will,

Thank you for the response and welcome! It makes complete sense that each boat would vary in exact size. I'm too used to machine produced goods these days.

Beautiful work on your own hatch doors. Is that wood burning? And what type of wood?

Thank you,
Jesse

Could consider a 1 or 2-piece smoke acrylic vs. teak companionway door.

I don't have an O'DAY 19 either, but have made companionway drop boards for similar boats.
Here are a few pictures of O'DAY 19 drop boards to help others picture what you need. Too bad none have dimensions <GRIN!>

Thank you. Yes it's woodburning. I made them from Spanish red cedar. Not a strong wood if you expect to sail in heavy weather, but easy to handle and work with. If I ever get to take Dragonfly out for and ocean sail, I'll do something with plywood.

Just got my O’Day 19 about 3 weeks ago, lots of little projects including the companion way doors! Here are mine with measurements.

Thanks! Love the one where the new door shows your reflection.

tunaboat captain here. My Oday 192 keel lift line due for replacement. Like your winch. Is the cable plastic coated metal? Diameter?

Not coated. Coated calls, especially one the gets immersed, is not great on boats.

I haven measured my lift cable, but it looks to be 1/4". It's possible it is only 3/16th.

It's under a foot of snow, at the moment.
