I am enjoying all the replies, but please also note my original post is much more inclusive than just the military MRE ;) as a refresher it was:
"Just curious if anyone uses freeze dried or other MRE type meals onboard, and if any in particular are better than others."
I know back in the 70s there were (freeze dried?) meals that you dumped hot water in the bag and had a decent tasting meal.
That was my point in post #30. If you can boil water, freeze dried and and add-boiling-water-and-eat meals are the way to go. Light, tasty, no refrigeration.

Any brand/flavor that you like in particular?

I suppose if I had to, it would be Mountain House. Also produce the bucket of dinner. They make LRPs, a cut above the MRE.

Hmm Freeze-dried, Mountain House was the old standby, but now also Good-To-Go rocks it. Both on Amazon.

Broths, Soups and Ramen are great and cheap. Mac-and-cheese with Tuna mixed in will keep you going all night.

Another Mt House tip: If you do the freeze dried eggs for breakfast, BE SURE to get a brick of compressed bacon to chip off of and add to the eggs. They make the resulting scramble about 1000x more edible.

NOW we're getting' somewhere! :) I'll start investigating these suggestions.

Thanks!

Tabasco solves all taste deficiencies.

I'm flashin' back to my college days. Now, what happened to the real flashbacks I was promised? Still waitin'!
LOL that’s where I learned that! I have to say some days I still crave it. We can work on the flashbacks.

We keep a few bags of Mountain House on board as emergency chow. But normally we just meal plan and par-cook and freeze. Working with an ice box I want everything as cold as possible when it goes in. Marinate a steak put it in a zip lock bag and freeze it. It's just more ice in the box until steak night.

The main thing is make sure you re-hydrate it. Eating it dehydrated will make you very sick.
