Looking at a c22 need advise

Looking for a seasoned pro. I just looked at a c22 and have some questions. First about the keel. Not sure if this is fairing compound, rust/ corrosion, or just needs scraping. Hull appears to be sound. I spent over an hour aboard looking and poking. I don’t find soft spots, jus leaks from hardware and things needing replacing (still has original keel winch).

Oh and howdy from Cypress, Tx. We are the Marquart’s and looking at an 84’ c22. I might be able to get for a song and dance. I have loads more pics and need to phone a new friend!

I owned #10496 1981. They made lots of those great boats. There agree also a few entire websites devoted ENTIRELY to C22s, which you should and ought to find in addition to sixths fine group here.

The C22 is a great boat, but this one needs some serious keel work in my opinion. the cast iron appears to be delaminating and very rusty. The keel also appears to be canted at a weird angle in relation to the keel trunk. The boat is not on the correct trailer and the keel looks like it may have been damaged by sitting too hard on the trailer while traveling.
It is hard to say if it is worth it, even for cheap in my opinion. I would spend a little more to get a better starting point.
best of luck Dano

That swing keel looks shot. The lift wire is gone, the iron looks corroded through.

No, keep looking.... I'm sure it can be fixed/replaced. However, the keel's condition is also an indicator of other issues that will arise from this poorly maintained vessel. Sails, hardware, the seam between deck and hull, mast and boom condition all need inspection. There's just so much. You can buy an older model Catalina 22 that has been loved and maintained for a reasonable price. I'd keep looking to find one that has been sailed recently abd has NO missing parts (such as mast, trailer, rudder and keel.)

Thanks for all the replies. Here are more pics. Inside is clean, no mold or smells. Some water intrusion at the hardware points. No noticeable deck to hull delam, no soft spots, mast step/ compression post are tight, rigging not frayed, rudder has no dings dents, original sails come with it, hatches all good shape. Might be able to get it for a couple hundred. We have no issues waiting or with a project for the right price.

So, what is the cost of a new keel & associated hardware or used keel?

Just a quick look at Catalina Direct shows related lifting hardware, but no actual iron keel is listed. Of course, it is no surprise that that related hardware... pivot pins, winch, cable, connectors... yada yada.... will certainly surpass the cost of the boat. The good news is that it looks like all parts are there and the owner hasn't gone salvage mode yet. So if new cat has a few thou to invest on top of his own labor, he could end up with a decent boat. But............. on the other hand.......... here's a nice one ready to sail, asking $3800.

Note that you can lift the boat off the trailer using some strong beams and jacks (see multiple you tube videos) so you can get at that keel without launching it in water.

Please take a careful look at the trailer. Especially if the boat has been in salt water. I’ve had structural issues with two previous experiences. In one case, the axle beam failed while trailering.

The keel is rusted, but it can be ground down to fresh metal, coated with epoxy and faired to the correct shape. Stingysailor.com has
detailed instructions.
I'm more concerned by the angle the keel is sitting at. I suspect there's damage to the keel hanger and/or pivot. The keel pivots on a bronze rod through a hole in the keel. Two hangers hold the rod to the hull and they're bolted into threaded rods (weldments) buried in the hull. If these weldments are damaged it's quite a project to dig out the fiberglass they're buried in and then fiberglass the new one's into place. Another possibility is the hole in the keel has worn and enlarged to the edge of the keel and the bronze rod has come free. That also is a complex repair.
This posting has diagrams of the keel and it's hardware.

I just called Catalina Direct ,a keel is no longer available. the photo looks as though the hangers are busted because of the odd angle, I think I would pass on this. The last 22 I bought (a 1976) was $1200.00, the man I bought it from told me he paid $500.00 for it so watch prices when you shop.

@newcat22 Keels are still available but from Catalina Yachts. Catalina direct is not associated with the manufacture. the new style keels are encased in glass and are quite spendy. that said your in TX and there is a great racing scene there so spare keels are not that hard to come by as many have parts boats.

start here with all your questions

Online forums are great but i have seen many a boat become a continual project over the years. The saying is generally true "there is nothing more expensive than a free boat"

You'll find a Catalina 22 specific forum here on SBO, and a very active FB group where most hang out. The tech manual from the association linked above is invaluable and worth its weight in gold. it will save you weeks of internet searching.

Here’s an update: got 2 wheels (galvanized) with good tires for $100 to bring her to my shop. Thhe keel “adjusted” on the 2 hour ride home. I can now see drum roll…the cable eye is intact! The keel appears to only need to be re faired. I crawled around in the hatches and under the cockpit and it looks really good and shiny. It appears she is heeling on the trailer to the starboard side (wich makes me feel better about the angle of the keel on the trailer). I’ll get better pics and more info this week. I am very fortunate to work at my families shop (we do industrial coatings) and have 3 forklifts and sandblasters (including a big room blaster). Stay tuned and positive! I am great full for the community and all the comments. If anyone needs any specific pics, measurements or anything drop me a line and I’ll be able to assist in anyway I can. Thanks again to everyone and I hope this will be a great journey!

Having the sandblasters is nice. I got a small cheap one and it took forever. I went at my keel first with a hammer and chisel, then an angle grinder, then sandblasted. Put a coat of unthickened epoxy on right away before it begins to rust. stingysailor.com has a great series on fairing the keel.
