Hec @ 19

How many folks have liability insurance on their sailboats? Mine is twenty years old and is kept here in my yard, so I'm not interested in full coverage. She's a 26D.

Of course I have liability insurance but I don't have hull insurance.

If you launch your boat and "T" bone a 50 foot yacht and and set it on fire and burn up a pier full of boats you will be living in a cardboard box and eating out of garbage cans for the rest of your life.

I think I pay

$50 a year for basic liability through auto club, unless you sail in a pond in your backyard with no crew and no other boats, you would be crazy not to. You can't get a guest slip in a marina without it. Tim I like your description better Ross ;D

I'm hoping

I'm hoping that Hec has the terms mixed up. Liability is pretty much a necessity and is typically the minimal amount of insurance one could have. Collision is the coverage that someone adds to their insurance to cover damage done to their boat in an accident. Comprehensive can be added on top of that to cover any other types of damages.

"First, I'd kill...

...all the lawyers" or whatever. Since that really isn't possible, I'd get liability insurance. If you can afford to lose your boat, or don't care if you do, you can skimp or pass on hull insurance. But you cannot pass on liability insurance, nor would you want to. It's a litigious world out there people...

Easy there, friend!!

Nope, I'm not crazy, just ignorant. That's why I asked. Would you prefer that I HIDE my ignorance? I bet a lot of other folks who never considered the issue have benefited from this thread...

Jim , I have checked and it ain't.

Insurance people don't give anything away. I get mine through Progressive. Are they any good? I have no idea! Never filed a claim.

liability insurance

You should have liability insurance. There are just to many things that can go wrong that can result in your damaging another boat. I get mine through my home insurance company, Allstate. And have been very satisfied with it. The old saying goes, "If in danger of hitting another boat choose the least expensive one". Enough said. Duane "Novelman"

Hec, There are three stages of mental prowess.

Ingorant. That is easily cured with education. Crazy. That can be helpful when somebody tries to get too close. Stupid. There ain't no cure for stupid . It goes clear to the bone. ;D ;D I have a good friend who has retired from an executive position at a local Insurance company. We talk about many things and insurance is one of them. Some people like to think of insurance as a gamble. His discription is that insurance balances a small known loss against a posible future large unknown loss. You can afford to spend 200 dollars per year against the posibility of a future 200,000 dollar loss.

Call Your agent

I wanted just liability on my 77 V222, when I called my agent to set it up, He said I was covered under my home owners policy. No extra cost. Score one for old boats!

Maybe it has something to do with the size of the boat

But read your policy carefully. My policy excludes liability coverage for watercraft and motor vehicles.

Home-owners policies

cover very small boats, like trailerables. If you have anything that needs a slip or a mooring, you'll need liability, especially if you own any assests; house, RV, anything of value. I have 300k liability and hull insurance for my '94 Bene 40 and pay about the same as I do for my bike, which is a gigantic rip if you ask me.

it's what they call cheap insurance...

Hec, Most marinas, at least the ones that I have docked at, will not allow you to dock without basic liability insurance. I too had my boat insured with Progressive, very good claim service. Had to call Tow boat, 500 dollars to be towed to a destination I could see. Brought my receipt to my agent and they cut me a re-imbursement check had in in my mail box the next day. When boating, it's not my boat that I am worried about. I dock and anchor out regularly, and I am exposed to a lot of very expensive boats, none of which I could afford to fix. God forbid there's a hidden current at the dock, gust of wind or your anchor let's go in a blow. I happily write my insurance check.

I'm not just guessing-

Spent 15 years in property and casualty insurance. As usual, this board is mostly right (score one for us!). First, yes, a standard homeowners policy (the form is HO-3, used in all 50 states) offers protection for liability under your house, for the amount of liability listed on the policy. However, as you guys surmised, there is a length limit of 25 feet (LOA). Longer gets no coverage. And again, liability covers other people and their property, not yours. That's what hull insurance is for. Boats don't usually have comp and collision split, but unlike homeowners policies, the boat policies vary widely between companies and states! I think of liability coverage as lawyer insurance. Hate them until I need them! BTW, when shakespeare proffered killing the lawyers first, he meant that without them, a society would sink into chaos and destroy itself. My, how times have changed. BTW, timo, it might be a misprint- thy sold spouse. Lucky guy. Ross- you nailed it. Your friends description is how we always explained it. cup

Just can't get past the image...

...Ross painted of a 'T' Boned 50-footer, cascading fire that completely engulfs the adjacent docks and eventually, after the flesh is picked from the uninsured/under insured bones, forces him/her to eat from a cardboard box and live in a garbage can...or is it vice versa? Not a 'Whistler Image' by any means, but a good cautionary image for sure. Glad there wasn't a question regarding 'umbrella coverage' and the pros/cons. Oops! It just got inserted :)

Or you can say that you did it on purpose because you hate everyone and the state will pay for your food, clothing, and shelter for a very long time.
