is my engine finished

I have an 1982 Catalina 30 with the 11hp universal raw water cooled engine. I have an over heating problem. I have checked all the normal things, thermostat, water pump, thru hull, and hoses. I found that water comes in through the thru hull and goes through the water pump than goes to the end of the hose that connects to the block. From there little to no water comes out the top of the engine that would go to the short hose that connects to the exaust manifold. I have already had the manifold off and steamed out at a radiator shop. After talking to a local catalina dealer he said that it sounds like the engine block cooling is blocked with junk and my engine is problbly finished. He said there is no way to steam it out.New engine is 20 hp and approx 12000.00 canadian. That sounds crazy. There must be a way to fix the existing engine.any help would be great!!!!

Didn't mention the impeller.

Hey Larry, you mentioned everything but the impeller. You probably did check it,but, wouldn't it be silly if that was the problem? They can be easily damaged if your engine overheats and should be checked. Just a thought. RG.

Worth a shot!

If you have more time than money, pull the head. Get yourself a set of cleaning rods which are small brushes on flexible spiral wire and go at it. If the engine has casting plugs (freezeout plugs) pop them out for additional access to the water jacket areas around the cylinders. To do it right the engine should come out of the boat and be disassembled. However as I described might do the trick. Keep the water and crud out of the cylinders. Send the head out for boiling out and a valve job. Regards, Ran

Two suggestions.

As a multiple list lounger, I've seen threads on this either here or on the sailnet Cal list. Check the archives for articles, there is a chemical flush that has been reported as very successful in getting the salt out of the block channels. Beta Marine offers an excellent Universal replacement. It uses a Kubota block, parts are readily available from tractor dealers at non-marine prices and the marinazation is excellent, all service parts are moved forward for easy access. They offer a 13.5 hp version that will fit your existing mounts at 1/2 the price of competative engines. Contact, Joe DeMers jedsail@mindspring.com

Another thought

Check the impeller, if vanes have broken off they could cause blockage. You might try a reverse flush with a water hose attached to the short hose going to the block and push out gunk from the inlet side. As a raw water cooled engine, if you don't have a filter screen between the raw water intake and the water pump, you can inhabit the cooling jackets with plants and animals and inorganic material. I'd try flushing in reverse to see if I can push out unattached material. Good luck and let us know what happens...could be any of us with similar engines.

BLOCKED HOSE

A friend of mine on his 30 found one of the hoses had a 90degree bend in it and it was at that point that some of the impeller pieces got stuck and plugged up the cooling system..good luck

Blocked hoses & thermostat

I had the same problem on my 5411. One of my hoses was blocked about 80% right where it connected to the engine. Cleaning it out did help a little. I also tried several new thermost but in the end I ran the engine without the thermostat and what a difference(it's still going), but I'm in Southern Calif. If the experts say the engines shot and all blocked up inside you might give it a try. Just have to warm up the engine for a much longer period.

IT'S THE IMPELLER

YOU HAVE BROKEN BLADES STUFFED INTO PLACES WHERE THERE IS AN ANGLE. PULL OFF THGE HOSES AND GET A PIECE OF WIRE AND POKE AROUND. ITS IN THERE SOMEWHERE I GUARANTEE.
