Today I bought a Lewmar Sprint 600 windlass and now am wondering if anyone out there has any tips on installation on my 1992 Catalina 28.
My idea is to cut off enough of the forward part of the anchor rode hatch and replace this piece with a reinforced fixed section, mount the windlass on the new section and install the switch in the anchor rode well.
what say you?
Thanks,
Bill

windlass install

Bill I posted some photos etc of my install of a lewmar proseries on my cat30 - see link - it is under boat photos /specs - "improvements" works well although the cat 30 well is too shallow to take more than 50 ft of chain before it piles up to the hawse hole.

Thanks Tom

Tom, this is exactly what I was hoping to see!
Is the aft extension of the backing plate a support for the thin cut edge of the aft section of the hatch?
Is there a piece bolted to this aft lid section to help seal/support the forward edge?
How is the fixed piece attached to the boat?

great stuff!!
Thanks again,
Bill

If you looked at the windlass mount in profile you would see , from top the windlass and 4 mounting bolts, then the top backing plate which extends from roller to the cut edge of the lid, then the original lid (front cut section), then the lower backing plate which extends under the lid and deck from near the aft end of the anchor roller to just aft of the forward lid (yes you are right it sticks out an inch or so to support the aft part of the lid. Windlass bolts go down through top backer, lid and bottom backer.

I am away for two weeks but I will try to take some digital photos /close ups which will surely be clearer than my words.

Catalina 28 Windlass

Hi Bill,
I am currently in the process of installing a Lewmar in my 1992 28 (#222 ). I cut a piece of 1/2 cuttiing board to fit inside the locker on top of the lid lip. I cut two rails of 1" cutting board which will mount to t he sides of the locker, the triangular board will mount to these.

The windlass will mount to the original door( cut just aft of the windlass ) and through the mounted cutting board with another backing board, holding the whole assembly together. IF you really wanted to tie it down, you could add some 5200 between the layers and around the edges.

I haven't figured out the exact wiring yet but plan to run 4AWG from the #1 house battery to the windlass solenoid mounted somewhere in the forward berth. I have a Lewmar corded remote and a waterproof connector I will mount in the anchor locker.

I mounted the windlass as far forward as possible to get the most depth- my Danforth shaft was too long so I had to buy a new anchor with a shorter one (Manson, Rocna or similar ) and I replaced my 3 strand rode with 1/2" 8 plait since it stores in less space. I will have room for 50 feet of 1/4" chain and 300+ feet of rode.

This is a lot larger project than I anticipated when I started! I can't upload any pictures for some reason. If you would like, I'll email them to you.

Greg
