Hunter 290 on a trailer?

I recently bought a 290 Hunter with displacement of 7500 lbs and a keel of just under 4'. She comes with a steel cradle and it occurred to me that potentially I could buy a 10,000 lb float trailer and have the cradle welded to it creating my own trailerable boat. For the near term I would simply drag her home for the winter to save on the yard costs but in future we might relocate for a year or two and I love the idea of being able to trailer her where I need to go. Obviously she is big enough to necessitate a crane for the mast lowering and raising so that is a cost, but I figure I will be needing a crane to put her in the water anyway.
What am I not thinking about?

What do you save? My yard charges as much to pull+place the mast as they do to store the boat in the winter.

Everyone that I know that did something like this as a 'cost savings' regretted it.

Winter storage is going to run me $ 850.00 plus the cost of the lift which should be close to the same either way save for the fact that the mast would need to be dropped. I can find several float trailers less than $ 4000.00 which would only take a couple of years to pay for. I am betting that any new owner would be paying for the trailer as well which then lowers my cost of the trailer to hopefully zero.

Factor in the costs of paying someone to move the trailer unless you own a capable truck. Consider that the trailer tires will need to be replaced periodically for age or wear. You will still need the use of a lift and a crane to drop the mast and sit the boat on the cradle. There will be also some insurance costs. Keeping the float trailer at home year round may save some money on storage but will not likely keep a wife and neighbors happy unless you own a good spread of land. I really do not know if the savings would be enough to compensate for the time and effort.

way too much work and pressure to do it that way ...i could sew my finger back on my hand if i cut it off but then i might have a finger that folds backwards ill just let the people that sew fingers do it and the same goes for launching and stepping your mast if they break it they fix it if you break it you fix it and and it kinda nice to pamper one's self sometimes...not to mention all the insight you may receive from the launch guys ...they are trained to look for a lot of problems in the process and besides do you want to launch the boat and spend a day getting over the adrenalin high from all the stress or go jump on board and go sailing feeling fresh...this is one of the few times i think valet parking is cool

You might come close to break-even someday if you get the trailer cheap and store on your own land, but don't count on the next owner paying extra for the trailer. Its been my experience that once past 26 feet LOA trailers are a liability for 95% of new owners.

Most people with this size boat figure the land movement part of sailboat ownership is best accomplished with their checkbook.

Not so Easy

Special trailer low low to float in 4' water and the arch has to be removed
for transporting on high way and low trailer for clearing on highway or local roads, very big heavy duty truck needed and most buyers won't want the trailer
Way too much trouble and think think before doing it and we do not remove mast for winter storage.

Doesn't storage include the cost of lift-in / lift-out? It does around here. $850 for lift, pressure clean, storage, and lift-in. I think my 272 is about the limit of easily trailered boats. I have a big shed, pick up truck... I bring it home for Winter because Winter is brutal up here.

Thanks.

Is the boat in the wide load category? You may require permits to move it, and some places require suitable insurance to cover the move, and that's not something that your regular comprehensive will cover under normal circumstances. We're an inch over for recreational in BC but not inside the commercial size range. Permit required, but not check in at the scales. Small, but important points.

Your boat is not in the trailerable sailer category. If you want to trailer sailer, you need to get a boat that does that, like a West Wight Potter 19. A 30 foot boat is something that professionals move for you.

I have a Hunter 290, and the size of the boat exceeds the Legal size to trailer. You would need an 18 wheeler to move it, and then a lift to put it back in the water.

Thanks Everybody, I did not think of the width and I am glad I asked for input from you smart folks.
Onward and upward,

Many good points but when someone tells me they are going to weld a cradle to a trailer, there are many factors to modifying that trailer and even then the boat is not supported well enough to transport on a cradle. Then there is a thing called length of ramps to launch from and that style trailer is about useless wth a cradle. If anyone wants to know about launching up to 33 foot boats on a trailer, feel free to do so as I use to many times at lakes that had no travel lifts. I also was able to get them out as well. In other words, I know my trailers.

How about this one, a Rawson 30 on a custom built job.

Remove the aft supports?

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Not just that, but the bow chock is tight against the hull, and when the trailer was at a angle on the ramp, the pivot point (the lower forward edge of the keel) would be a few feet back of where it is currently. That boat was lifted on.

Thanks Meriachee. Once again, your deductive skills are sound.

It's close to 500 miles away at the moment, in Durango, CO. Too big of a road trip for me, and the legal hoops seem daunting.

The seller writes that she's ramp launchable and retrievable, given the right ramp, I suppose. ;)

The 270 came from co. I recall warping a rotor on the F250 coming down the hill towards Denver.
I can also fairly say that many trips over the western range on hwy5 in BC in some seriously ugly weather were not as disturbing as that experience.
It certainly takes preparation and hardware to transport boats. They're not as light as people think, and they're usually bigger than you expect. Towing the Cat around is almost annoying, there's ALWYAYS some gawker type in the blind spot. Always.

According to specs, this boat displaces 12,000 pounds and the trailer weighs in a 3000 lb. You'd need a tractor trailer to tow it. I know a ramp that would launch it, but it is used by tractor trailers and sea planes.

Don't believe a word she says. Look for a pickup truck that can pull 15,000 lb in and out of water and up hills. Good luck finding one.
