Ok, while I am looking for a new boat I am still working like crazy on my beloved 1979 27 Hunter. 1st the weather in NJ played a cruel joke and snowed again! I had to wear my fishing boots to keep my feet dry.

1st Project: Removed the original moldy carpet from all walls to find a orange foam glued to the fiberglass. I spent 4 hrs grinding and vacuming the orange foam off of every spot. The quarter berth was more mold than foam

2nd Project: Remove teak & holly floor (pics included).

From here we are replacing the wall coverings with vinyl foam backed in a light tan. Next floor. part of me wants to redo the teak & holly with a new sheet but I am debating... maybe something lighter.

That's great! Funny, looking at your pictures is just like looking at my own boat...even down to the blue bottom paint (only recently turned red). Differences: I never had wood floors, only plain white nonskid (well, lowskid...), plus I have three drawers on the port side under the bench.

Do you still have the old, original jib roller-furler? I still have mine, but the old bearing went dry and rusty. I was able to source a replacement at a bearing factory in San Diego a few years back. The boat yard guys are always giving me a hard time about my "old furler" and telling me I need a new one, but it works just fine. I also recently upgraded to new LED nav lightbulbs and LED interior lights.

No roller fuller. Only a hank on Jib. Roller fuller would be nice but not a major issue.

We are completely renovating the interior. Looking for a modern Bavaria look. But, for the floor most likely will go teak & holly with a satin finish. The teak walls and cabinets probably will oil but maybe a satin finish...

Outside. Need to finish wet sanding and polishing the hull. For the topside I am non skidding in white.

I wish you success on your project. If I'm ever in New Jersey I wouldn't mind seeing your boat (either this one or the 30) in person.

Cheers

I also ripped out my old crappy floor. I replaced it with a cheap composite floor from Home Depot. It wasn't that hard to put in, it was $60, is super durable, and completely turned around the inside of the boat. With a nice rope molding around the edges it looks prety damn good if I do say so myself. And if it gets ruined? Who cares! I'll just rip it out and drop in another one. Its so cheap! Here is a pic:

Did you use a Pergo-type product? Which flooring did you use?...looks great!

@Stollo looks great! I may go with Teak&Holly but in the head I am going to make a shower basin with drain. Going to leave the fiberglass and use a piece of starboard by the base of the door. Then make a teak great for the floor.

While the marina has a shower will be nice to have the ability. With this I plan on adding a on demand hot water heater 110v.

But... still on the planning. I need to get the floor cleaned up and ready.

We should have the teak and walls done shortly.

You should check out "DianaOfBurlington"'s pics and owner mods on this site. He owns and has been rebuilding a Hunter 25 in New Jersey. He also is the son of the original designer, John Cherubini. He was also involved in the layout of the early Hunter 30s.
Have fun!

OK. Got the floor almost ready for the new flooring. Nothing like scrapping silicon for a couple of hours. Alos, diagnosed the 110VAC system to prepare for the 5KBTU AC/Heat that is going in and the bilge pump.

After almost a year I am still finding garbage from the previous owner. The latest is by the fresh water tank. 100ft of old decayed 3/8" three strand rope.

Lookin' Good.
What was the issue with the 110? I'm getting ready to face the same job and even bought a new 110 panel with meters on it. I'm thinking I might as well run new wiring to my outlets and charger.

Cool projects, but why bother if your going just to sell the boat? I'm not saying its not worth re-doing the interior of the boat a little but why do all the work if your not going to be the one enjoying it. Also a new floor, while nice, probably won't be the make or break decision potential buyers will see in your boat.

Also, I'm pretty sure I've seen your ad to sell your boat on craigslist, and from what I've been observing you haven't had many offers (I saw you drop the price). You need more pictures bro! And a better description! Do you have a shoal keel or a deep keel? What types of sails? What port lights are you installing? Hows the paint? Etc. Also, if I connected the dots correctly to your YouTube account, your packing a Yanmar 2GM20 in that thing. That is HUGE. Most 27's from that era (mine included) have a crappy sb8 or worse, some Renault abortion. That 2GM engine adds at least another $2000 to your boat. Heck, why not sell the engine by itself, it'll easily bring in at least $3000.

@Stollo. Turns out we are holding onto it. I dropped the price awhile ago because we had a offer out on a new boat but that fell through. That is why I raised it.

As for offers last I checked was around 15-20 total!!

I actually just removed the ad. Overall I am happy with the boat for now. We got our slip in East Hampton and waiting on the truck.

@pvtpotter. The electrical on the 27 is not good but nor bad. Basically they ran solid copper wire from the main to the panel. The panel only has 1 breaker with all outlets connect to there. What I want to do is add a new panel for the 110VAC w/ a 30Amp Main then 3 breakers.

The factory wiring is good but will add in new 14/3 tinned marine wiring for the AC.

I will be taking pictures. of this.

Right on man. Glad to see your hanging onto the boat. You got a real gem with that 2GM20F engine in it. If you do wind up selling it I wouldnt ask for anything under $10,000 for the whole boat (fixed up of course) or $3000 for just the motor. Glad to hear you got all those offers, its nice to hear that there is still a healthy market for these old boats. I hope you have fun sailing up in the Hamptons, but I am sad to see another H27 like mine leaving Barnaget Bay.

Glad to see Hunter 27's being maintained. I find it's a boat that begs to be maintained, although sometimes reluctantly. I'm always looking at 30's and 33's (don't tell my 27) but I find that the 27 sails and handles heavier than it's length and that it is always 'just big enough.' It responds well to upgrades and refurbishment but can tolerate a fair bit of neglect because it is built stoutly.

My favorite aspect is that it is a safe, weatherly sailboat. I think that if it had a full keel it would probably be featured in distance cruising articles. The only reason that it hasn't already is because, like most other H27 owners, it started out for me as more of a weekend/coastal boat due to family/work responsibilities.

It may not be the best or the biggest but I think an old H27 is a LOT of boat for the money. My only disappointment would have to be the knowledge that, as a DIY'er I could be putting the same amount of time, effort, hassle, and money into a much bigger boat. Sometimes it seems that the effort is wasted in this regard. In exchange for nominally greater slip fees I could be repairing the engine in a H33, or fixing gelcoat in a H30 for not much more money and have a roomier boat at the end of the day...the purchase point of most Hunters of this vintage being only a few thousands apart, if that... Such is life I guess.

The 30 would be my best choice. I found one in NJ within my budget but my 27 is perfect for right now.

I have a stack load of improvements coming;

Webasto 5LBTU AC/Heat
Pressure Water System w/ On Demand Water HEater
New 110VAC Panel and Main
Teak Cockpit floor
Teak & Holly Salon Floor
Satin Varnish all wood inside.

Boats leaves for East Hampton on April 28th-30th so some maybe done out there.
