... And, the boom may not be designed for mid-boom sheeting. I like the solution @rgranger shows from a sailing standpoint. ..... On my Starwind 27, the traveller on the bridgedeck, right in front of the companionway, was a huge inconvenience when anchored or not sailing, ....
@Scott T-Bird those are all good points. On the H26, the main sheet is mid-boom sheeted and was designed to attach to the U-bolt seen in the middle of the cockpit floor (first and third picture). So when not sailing, I just moved the sheet back to the U-bolt and it was out of the way.

While sailing, I did not find the sheet to be in the way and often used it as a hand hold when going up or down the companionway steps.

Funny you mention that .... I did too! It was really quite stabilizing. On my Starwind, I found that the traveler on the bridgedeck was great when I single handed. Only when Sue and I were on the boat together did the problems show up! I do prefer the traveler in front of the dodger on our Catalina. It's nice to have it out of the way.

What was a PITA on the H26 was the length of the main sheet. It was WAY too long and you always had a lot of extra rope to coil ... I stowed the excess in the cockpit locker and still had a coil of it on the floor to let out the sail when necessary. Here is a pic of how you had to stow the excess sheet...

BUT! you could not shorten the length of the main sheet because the main sheet and block system double-dutied as part of the mast raising system and you needed the extra length then.

The pic above also show the setup of the mainsheet before I installed the traveler. The mainsheet anchored at a point that was midship. There was no way to get the boom to centerline or even close to center line. It really affected your upwind performance.

Before the traveler, I would bring the boom over this way...

Our Oday came with the traveller mounted on the bridgedeck . On our previous boat it was mounted on the transom. I thought having the traveller mounted on the bridge deck would impede going down into the cabin . It didn't as much as I thought . Now after years of owning our boat ,there is no other place I would rather it be . If we aren't sailing ,I move it over to the port side and using a cam cleat ,it stays there . I really don't think I would go through the headache of mounting one on a cabin top. How do you not lock the tiller ,or wheel and not let go , to go forward to release the mainsheet or adjust the traveller ?

In addition to the very useful traveler that I described earlier for my old Hunter 27-2, I added a backstay adjuster. The backstay adjuster was a pretty easy and very helpful addition.

We had a 27-2 for many years and our low tech, low cost solution was a 3-1 purchase system of blocks, snatches, and a cam cleat that we ran from a reefing bail to a stanchion on the high side. We called it the "Cheat Sheet", and it was only used for light air to pull the boom windward. Once the air kicked up it wasn't needed as the vang helped to keep the sail flat. We found out before then (the hard way) that the stanchions will bend on a 27-2 before they pull out. Though when we went larger (and older) to our H34, we found out that mid boom with a traveler is great. The effective angle of the traveler mid-boom is like having an end boom traveler that extends out several feet outboard.
