End for end splice
Hi Jim;I usually splice all of my own running rigging. I had Hood Furling on my last boat, and tried to do an end to end splice, and was never satisfied with the results after 6-7 tries. There was still a significant "bulge" at the splice. It was enough to hamper smooth operation of the furler. I sent my requirements to West Marine rigging, and they returned a beautiful end to end splice with the same diameter throughout. I believe the cost was $15 plus the cost of the line. Use your spinnaker or jib halyard as a temp head stay, loosen the backstay and remove the head stay, slip the line under the furling unit, and re connect the headstay. Pick a calm day and you will have no trouble. Be sure to attach the temp.headstay, (halyard) to something solid, like the roller on your stem fitting, and snug it down with a winch. Be sure to specify the same diameter line called for in your Hood manual, to avoid jamming or slipping of the drive unit, larger will jam, smaller will slip under load. good luck, DaveS/V Westwind
