Jim

I have an '88 C30 with the original Hood Furler, that uses the single line loop. The furling line is pretty worn and I'd like to replace it. My boat is being stored on land, but with the mast up. Has anyone replaced that line. Is there a prespliced line available and is it possible to put it on with the mast up? Or is there any info available on how to splice the line? Thanks, Jim

Hood Line Drive furler

The Line must be spliced around the furler if the mast is up. Hood Yacht Systems should be able to provide you with splicing instructions for the line. I believe they also have a retrofit kit to make the Line drive furlers into a single line furler, if you want to go that route. They can be reached at Hood Yacht Systems(813)885-2182

End for end splice

Hi Jim; I usually splice all of my own running rigging. I had Hood Furling on my last boat, and tried to do an end to end splice, and was never satisfied with the results after 6-7 tries. There was still a significant "bulge" at the splice. It was enough to hamper smooth operation of the furler. I sent my requirements to West Marine rigging, and they returned a beautiful end to end splice with the same diameter throughout. I believe the cost was $15 plus the cost of the line. Use your spinnaker or jib halyard as a temp head stay, loosen the backstay and remove the head stay, slip the line under the furling unit, and re connect the headstay. Pick a calm day and you will have no trouble. Be sure to attach the temp.headstay, (halyard) to something solid, like the roller on your stem fitting, and snug it down with a winch. Be sure to specify the same diameter line called for in your Hood manual, to avoid jamming or slipping of the drive unit, larger will jam, smaller will slip under load. good luck, Dave S/V Westwind

crap

You may not need to shore up the mast if you are going to replace the line. The lowers will hold the mast just fine untill you can repin it after the replacement. Also, I did some improvements to the RF by using 2 4" tangs, easily twisted 90 degrees and bolted to the stem and the extrusion. This alteration keeps the fairleads from moving, which helps when you furl. while we are at it. the inside diameter of a hole saw, i think its 1.5 " is the prefect size of the center bearing instead of the 20 bucks for crap from hood. cole
