Thanks @Gunni — I do have a Fortress 20’ 5/16 and 250’ 5/8 3-strand as a backup and 500’ of 1/2 poly as a stern to shore line. I just don’t understand why the P.O. had such short lengths of chain, especially with the Lewmar Ocean concept 2 sitting on the bow.

@Kings Gambit - the reason for not going with the cyclone anchor is Incase the windlass gives out. As it sits there is over 160lbs of galvanized steel in that pile and I would hate to hoist it up by hand.

Anyone want a 15kg Bruce with a bit of chain as a backup? I’ll make you a good deal

Mahalo

Now I know why I have been invited aboard Mahalo... Anchor Meat. :yikes: Your going to go out and test anchor equipment and then say... Go to the bow John and haul up the anchor while I drive the boat. :banghead:I should have been more wary.

Oh well now that the secret is out. We will just have to...:hijack: bring out the best pirate behavior we can muster.:badbad::laugh:

TE="ifmdalvey, post: 1434004, member: 94122"]My previous experience was with a CQR but the quick resets is a company quote, so i am not disparaging the Bruce but would never return to an old style anchor.[/QUOTE]

Just curious... but did your Bruce fail often? Or did it just seem like the Mantus was more dug-in when your retrieved it?
Here is the basis for my comments:

We always anchor with 6:1 scope or more, when I expect some wind. We always pay pout the chain while backing the boat and carefully set the anchor, finishing with a final test at 2000 rpm in reverse.

Most of the time the Bruce (knock-off) did what it is designed to do but occasionally it would let go when we least expected it. I especially remember one morning, waking up feeling something was wrong, , after having been at anchor for 1.5 days with the wind around 10 kts from the west for the duration. The Bruce had let go. There were a few incidents before this incident erased any confidence I had in the anchor

There are a few differences we notice with the Mantus.

  • It sets much more positively and solidly than the Bruce ever did.
  • So far, it has set the first time, every time. That may change but so far that's our experience.
  • It takes more effort to break it out that it did to break out the Bruce
  • Often, the shank and the top of the arch are dirty indicating that they were below the surface of the bottom.
I sleep better these days.

Friends of ours (a confirmed Bruce fan for many years) bought a Rocna at about the same time we bought our Mantus and they have nothing but positive feedback as well.

Cheers

Matt

Is that all chain at 6:1?

Sounds like you had a general claw type of anchor; not a genuine Bruce--is that right?

It was a Bruce knock-off, yes
Well, I would not disparage the "Bruce" if it was not a genuine Bruce. It may be confusing to folks. However, I have no reason to doubt that your new anchor is superior to the one you had.

Of course you;re right, which is why I pointed out, in my post, earlier that We had a knock-off. I do wonder how many anchors out there are genuine vs. copies. Not just Bruces, but Danforths, "CQRs etc.

The Bruce both @jssailem and I are retiring are real Bruce’s, and mine has come unset mud/weeds and failed to reset. Woke up and had 1’ of water under the keel, combo of dragging ~30’ and lower tide. It was firmly set after a bit of skipping, 2000 for 2 minutes.

Probably many. I have what might be called a "knock off" CQR. It's a plow type anchor with a swivel at the neck as you see on CQRs. Different name, however--Plowmaster by Suncor. I usually refer to it as a CQR-type anchor. It has wider palms than a genuine CQR and is made of stainless steel. When I walk the docks for fun as I often do, I see MANY genuine CQRs on the boats. Along with genuine Bruces, Deltas, and Danforths. I see few of the newer ones--Mantus, Rochna, Spade, etc.

@LeslieTroyer and I will be putting his Mantus to the test the beginning of March. We will be able to report back with our findings. That is of course if the anchor holds. If it does not hold, who knows... you may have to call the Navy out as we drift along near Japan.

But it will be so confusing when you call the rescue boat. Will you be saying Thank you, thank you, thank you, or simply saying the boat's name three times per VHF protocol?

Life gets so complicated sometimes. Oh yeah, don't forget to get the pole dancing photos before you go.

Oh come on John - I would notice we were drifting way before we pass Tatoosh Light --- plus with EPRIB, PLB, AIS, DCS and XYZ to alert the Canadian Navy you will have plenty of time to pull the anchor pulled up an properly stowed;:poke:
