I thought there was a Spring thing something about a May Pole? The Vikings brought it to the Brits... On one of the many raids.

Since Bruce no longer makes smaller anchors,, Simpson/Laurence has been making them. I wouldn't call them "Knockoffs". Excellent construction I've used them on two different boats now, with zero failures in many hundreds of miles and many nights at anchor.

Now I DO carry a True Danforth Hi Test, but no way I'd ever go to sleep on a single Danforth in a tide way. I've seen them fail to reset too many times o n a tide change. Used in a Bahama moor, for sure.

I also carry a folding Northill for use where I MUST anchor in grass or weed, Again, not by itself in a tide way due to the fluke sticking up to foul the rode on a tide change

Thinking back, there was ONE instance where the Bruce would not set- Off Frazier Hogg key in the Berry's. But the cruising guide had warned us, and after the third time we watched it slide along the scoured bottom, we took a mooring.. This was off the Berry Island Club. Later, fou0nd quite good holding about a half mile away.

I just gave away a 20 kilo Bruce. Just wanted the silly looking thing off the boat. Sure wouldn't trust my boat on one, but a lot of folks swear by them.
I've never used a Mantus but I love my Rocna.

The Bruce was developed as an anchor for oil rigs in the North Sea, on short scope-Very happy with mine. After a freind watched my boat sit to a 45 knot squall with a boat rafted each side, he went and bought one :)

It took us over 6 months to GIVE the thing away. I guess they aren't all that popular. Anyway, to each his own.

Les,

I own both those anchors, in the same exact weights, have both used and tested both extensively, using a load cell, and yes my Bruce is genuine... No contest at all the Mantus destroys the Bruce in overall performance.... It's like Mike Tyson vs. Urkle.....

That's correct, however, oil rigs use more than one anchor thus they don't have the resetting issue that a single Bruce has.
