Halyard wrap with Furlex

New-to-me 2006 Hunter 38 with a Furlex 200s. If there is any tension on the jib halyard, I get halyard wrap while furling up the jib and cannot furl the jib up completely. See photos below. When all tension on the halyard is released, the wrap resolves and I can completely furl up the jib. I figured this out through trial and error in some dicey conditions with the jib and sheets flailing around. Is this normal behavior? I have a Selden fractional rig and the halyard exits a sheave box which is the recommended configuration in the 200s manual. I have cleaned and lubed the upper swivel so that it spins smooth and freely. I had a Catalina 30 with CDI furling gear and this didn't happen. Any suggestions for troubleshooting appreciated.

The wrap is due to the head of the jib too far away from the top of the furler. The jib needs to be raised about 10". This can be done by placing a pendant at the tack of the jib to raise it. You can make a temporary one using a loop of line.

Dave is correct. Another type of halyard deflector is the one made by Harken it's very easy to install.

There's likely a furlex version as well, I will check with Selden

If you have a back stay tensioner, adding some tension before furling also helps.

Yep. Wrong angle for the halyard. Not the furlers fault.

That's exactly what I had to do. In fact, the manual says a pendent longer than 6" should be wire

Notice in that figure how short the exposed halyard is. No chance for a wrap. Install a pendent at the drum and lessen your exposed line

I think this is a good observation and will be easy to confirm. It also agrees with the drawing in the manual I just posted above. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll work up a pendant today.

Thanks Justin. Did you swage your own wire pendant or is there a ready-made source online?

Funny you ask. The PO used a piece of line and referenced a piece of tape on the furler when he tied it. I just happened to find this ready made pendent in all of the stuff he gave me. It fit perfectly with a couple shackles I had around.

Raising the head of the sail further up the extrusion reducing the halyard angle and leaving less exposed worked. No more wrap issues.

Thanks all.

Or add a pendant to the head, instead of the tack. Your choice.

The jib must be raised reducing the length of the halyard at the top that causes the wrap. Adding a pendant at the top will not help.

Respectfully, that’s incorrect.
Adding a pendant to the head usually is usually preferred, because that maintains the height of the clew and the vertical sheet angle, which in turn controls leech twist.
adding a pendant at the tack raises the clew and the whole sail, which isn’t generally desirable, unless it’s a really short pendant being added to correct a clew that’s too low for the position of the sheet block.
